Fangio: ‘Anywhere from five to eight’ roster spots still to be decided before cut day

There are still some position battles to be had in the final preseason game, though a lot of that may have to do with special teams.

As we head into the final preseason game of 2021 for the Denver Broncos its important to keep in mind that there will be a lot of competition for the last few roster spots. Head Coach Vic Fangio was asked about how many of those spots are still up for grabs and he gave a range of five to eight.

“I haven’t really sat down and looked at it to give you an exact number, but there’s always the usual numbers—anywhere from five to eight.”

That seems a bit high to me, but for a team coming off a losing season it might make sense that the back end of the roster is thinner than most making competition much stronger for those final spots.

A big factor in making the team as the 50th-ish guy is how they play on special teams. That is one area you will want to keep a close watch on during the last game for anyone to stand out there. Fangio noted it is a huge factor in those final few spots on the team.

“It definitely factors in a big, big deal when you’re talking about the backup positions, particularly at linebacker, safety, wide receiver, running back, tight end. Everywhere but the o-line, d-line and quarterback. It’s a big factor.”

Fangio also noted that newly minted Broncos starting quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, would also be playing in the final preseason game, so we have even more of a reason to watch in that regard as well.
