One of the hallmarks of maturity is one’s ability to admit that one was wrong. So, I’ll say it here.
Vance Joseph, I was wrong.
I’m sorry.
After a historically awful start to the season, I along with a lot of Broncos Country saw the lack of defensive vigor dispiriting and disappointing.
Sports writers, bloggers, and the like can be a little reactionary in the face of adversity. There was plenty of it to start this season, but thankfully sports writers, bloggers, and the like don’t make the tough decisions for NFL teams.
Let’s be honest, would anyone have predicted the kind of turnaround that the Broncos have had over the last month after watching that 50-points loss to the Dolphins in week three? Anyone besides Sean Payton and George Payton? It took some real belief to hold on tight to the plan when the roar of disappointment coming from the fanbase could melt your face off.
The Broncos are currently 2nd in the league in takeaways this season. Over their 4-game win streak, they’ve notched 13. Something has clicked with this defense in a way that Broncos Country hasn’t seen in years. Pepper in some offensive competency for good measure and it’s no wonder the Broncos find themselves at .500 for the first time this season.
What Vance Joseph has done is nothing short of remarkable. Defenses as bad as we saw early in the season don’t just pull themselves out of the fire like this. Hats off to every effort Joseph and his defenses have made to salvage this season.
