Russell Wilson is a lot more than just a game manager

Calling Russell Wilson a game manager is a cop out of the lowest order. Let’s dig into why he’s bouncing back in his second season with the Denver Broncos

One of the biggest areas of nonsense I read about in the NFL is opinions on quarterbacks. Here are some quick examples:

  • First-round quarterbacks are what you need to rejuvenate your franchise
  • [Insert favorite player here] is the GOAT!
  • Running quarterbacks don’t win Super Bowls
  • Russell Wilson is a game manager

I expect more because I see more than the black-and-white landscape of the average NFL hot-take.

Russell Wilson was never broke.

Wilson has always been a quarterback that needs a really good head coach putting him in a position to succeed. He’s not a guy like Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers who can basically coordinate his own offense. He’s never been that guy.

His strength has never been that of a pocket passer in a West Coast offense picking defenses apart. If you don’t believe me, go ask my boy Nathaniel Hackett (sarcasm intended).

Wilson is an excellent NFL quarterback and anyone minimizing what he is doing with and for the Broncos this season doesn’t understand a damned thing about the nuances of quarterback play. Analysts like this are basically saying, “All I know is stats and if he’s doing good, then he’s good. If he’s doing bad, he’s washed.”

Here are my No Bull hot takes to add to the pile that I bet most of you in Broncos Country will find yourself nodding your head with because it sounds more like the truth:

  1. Last season clearly showed that Russell Wilson needs a solid offensive coordinator guiding the offense
  2. Russell Wilson’s best attribute is his clutch ability. He’s at his best when the game is on the line and he needs to create wins on the field of play.
  3. Sean Payton knows how NFL offense works at a very high level and understands how important it is to scheme his offense to fit his quarterback’s strengths.

Here’s the scary thought: what’s Wilson going to look like with another year of positive improvements on this roster and a full year under his belt of being in this offense?
