The Denver Broncos could not convert a third down coming out to start the second quarter and the Los Angeles Chargers would take over at their own 12 yard line. They would quickly punt it away after Alex Singleton and Zach Allen converge on a third down sack.
Russell Wilson and the Broncos ground up two first downs on the legs of Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin, but he then missed a wide open Jerry Jeudy inside the 10 yard line. Jeudy was unable to adjust to a poorly placed ball. On third and six, Wilson was predictably sacked to bring out the punt unit.
Justin Herbert and the Chargers finally got things going with a good mix of run and pass to get across midfield. A potential trick play to Keenan Allen with an option to pass went incomplete, then a Josey Jewell sack threw the Chargers back to a third and 16. A pass to Austin Ekeler pass in the flat gained 14, which allowed the Chargers to go for it on fourth and two where they would not convert keeping the score 7-0 in favor of Denver.
Denver would do nothing with their next possession and another missed deep pass to Jerry Jeudy would bring out the punt unit with two minutes to go in the first half.
Justin Herbert left the game with a finger injury on his right index finger, which brought Easton Stick into the game. On his first third down he would be strip-sacked by Ja’Quan McMillian knocked the ball loose and scooped and scored to put the Broncos up big.
Somehow, the referees called that an incomplete pass and overturned the scoop and score. They would punt it instead.
With 1:28 left in the first half, the Broncos tried to get a scoring drive together before halftime. Three straight checkdowns to Samaje Perine set them up at midfield with a third and one. Perine would convert that too. Wilson found a wide open Lucas Krull for a 35-yard gain and a facemask penalty to give the Broncos a first and goal with 23 seconds left.
A critical misstep by Jerry Jeudy not getting a second foot down on an easy touchdown pass led to the Broncos ending the half with a field goal instead.
Broncos 10, Chargers 0.
