It is hard to believe, but as we sit right now, the Denver Broncos are just one game back of their division rival Kansas City Chiefs in the loss column. The Broncos are 7-6 and are still the hottest team in the league by winning six of their last seven games. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have lost three out of their last four games and saw their quarterback Patrick Mahomes throw one of the biggest temper tantrums we have seen by an NFL quarterback at the end of the game.
Both teams are trending in opposite directions. So, we have to ask the million-dollar question. Can the Denver Broncos really catch and pass the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC West division title?
The answer to that question is, unfortunately, probably not. The Chief's remaining schedule is not difficult on paper and they effectively have a two-game lead over the Broncos because of tiebreakers.
Their remaining games include a road game against the three-win New England Patriots, a home game against Aidan O’Connell and the Raiders, a home game against Jake Browning and the Bengals, and a season finale game against Easton Stick and the Chargers. They can easily win out and clinch the west here in a few weeks even if the Broncos remain hot. Now, as we saw this past Sunday, any given Sunday can produce a few upsets so never say never, but it will take some luck to catch the Chiefs.
With that said, the Chiefs look vulnerable. They lost their top running back due to a shoulder injury, their receivers are struggling, and Travis Kelce is not catching touchdowns at the rate he has in the past. Their defense is solid, but they have looked beatable recently and are part of the reason they have lost three of their last four games.
If the Broncos do make the playoffs, I’d love to see the Broncos head to Arrowhead to take on the Chiefs. This looks like a team the Broncos can beat. Hell, they already have, and eliminating the Chiefs in the postseason would be wonderful. I am getting WAY ahead of myself here but let a man dream.
I will be rooting for the Patriots to pull another upset this weekend, If they can do that and the Broncos can defeat the Lions, man, things will get exciting.
So, now I ask you Broncos Country. Do you think the Broncos can win the AFC West?
