According to The Athletic’s senior NFL insider Diana Russini, Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is expecting to be cut by the Broncos in March.

She continues by saying that Wilson has been starting these past two months knowing the organization was most likely going to move on from him after this season.

As we all know by now, Wilson has a $37 million in injury guarantees that become guaranteed through 2025 on the fifth day of the league year in 2024. So, if the Broncos picked up that option, he would be tied to the team for at least two more seasons. They also risked him suffering an injury and instantly locking that option in. The team wanted to remove those injury guarantees from Wilson’s contract but that never happened and Wilson was reportedly not keen about it in the first place. So, now with the Broncos offense struggling, the team going 1-3 in their last four games and facing long odds of making the postseason, the team decided to make the move and protect themselves from a serious injury.

The two sides parting ways this offseason seemed logical even before today but it is clear it is going to happen now. The Sean Payton and Russell Wilson fit was an odd one to begin with. The two schematically do not make sense and personality-wise, they do not mesh very well either. However, the two tried to make it work, and to their credit, Wilson statistically is having a much better season than he did last season. In the end, it did not work out and the Broncos will once again be in the market for a new starting quarterback.

With the Broncos being on the books for Wilson’s guarantees, I do not see them paying out big money for a free agent quarterback. They do not really have the trade assets to acquire one either so their best course of action is likely drafting one. This draft will have multiple first-round quarterbacks and the Broncos look destined to have a top-15 pick. So, we shall see how that all plays out in the coming weeks and months as we progress into the offseason.
