Despite several large mishaps in his time as general manager of the Denver Broncos, NFL Network reports that George Paton is expected to return to the team in 2024.

According to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Denver Broncos are expected to bring back general manager George Paton for the 2024 season.

Here is a short snippet from their report that broke early this morning:

The Broncos head into the offseason with plenty of questions and a variety of pertinent conversations to be had. But sources say there shouldn’t be a question about the status of general manager George Paton.

Paton is viewed as safe inside the organization, sources say. Based on his overall evaluation talents and a strong working relationship with Sean Payton since the head coach arrived last offseason, all indications are Paton should stay on.

This might come as a surprise to some in Broncos Country who certainly thought Paton would be dismissed. In fact, I think the overall pulse of fans was hoping that they would look to find someone else to work alongside Payton in the years to come. While Paton has made some quality selections in the draft over the past three seasons, most felt that the failed Russell Wilson trade, the terrible hire of Nathaniel Hackett, and several questionable free agent decisions have done a lot of short and long-term damage to the team. It could even be argued that those moves set the team back years compared to other franchises in the league who have secured their young franchise quarterbacks and filled their rosters with talented rookies.

The summation of those three things deemed Paton dismissible. However, it appears those running the show in Dove Valley feel otherwise. The report indicates that Paton and Sean Payton have a good working relationship with each other. If that is true, I understand retaining him—but with a great slate of candidates this cycle, I’m very surprised the Broncos are going in this direction.

What do you think, Broncos Country? Are you satisfied with this news? If not, who would you prefer out of the candidates above? Let us know how you feel in the comments section.

Do you think the Broncos should retain George Paton for a fourth season with the team?
