Broncos fans in Seattle are walking to end Alzheimer's in honor of Pat Bowlen

Broncos fans are raising money for Alzheimer's research and awareness in Seattle

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Broncos Country is not only alive and well, but helping society wherever we go. To honor former Broncos owner, Pat Bowlen, a huge and growing group of Broncos fans living in Seattle (including yours truly) have created a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's. It was announced last year that Pat Bowlen is suffering from the devastating disease, and the Seattle group is holding the walk in his honor.

According to the organizer, Shawna Thorington, support so far has far surpassed her initial goals.

"This is the first year we are doing this event... we are working on building the charity efforts of [Denver Broncos Fans of Seattle, DBFS] and the Alzheimer's Association is the one we support the most I would say.  My goal was 10 walkers and $1000 for our first year.  Right now we have 26 walkers (a few more to join) and have raised $3485 (with more to come)!  So very excited with our first effort!  We plan to make some signs to support loved ones and for Pat Bowlen, the reason we have chosen to support this cause so heavily."

Alzheimer's disease is a severe form of dementia, which causes painful memory problems in those who are affected by it. As the population ages, more people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease as they near their 60s and 70s. The disease is hard not only on its victims, but on the loved ones of those victims. If you want to read more about what we know about Alzheimer's disease and potential cures, here is a blog post I wrote about it.

The Alzheimer's Association hosts the world's largest event to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer's disease. They donate money to research, care funds, and support for families living with it.

Beating the Seahawks at anything is a satisfying win, but when it's for charity it makes it even more glorious.

Seahawks' SB Nation site, Field Gulls, has agreed to compete/help promote the event with Mile High Report readers to see who can raise more money for this cause! To help the Denver Broncos Fans of Seattle team raise their goal of $5,000 and beat the Field Gulls, click here and then click "Donate to My Team" (or, if you want to help me get a free shirt, click on Kelly Fleming and donate to my entry). Beating the Seahawks at anything is a satisfying win, but when it's for charity it makes it even more glorious.

Shawna added about the DBFS group,

"It's like a family for some of us. And I am truly inspired and humbled how this is coming together."

Broncos fans really are the best fans (and I guess not all Seahawks fans are bad).
