The Denver Broncos traded up from 28 to 23 and have made their first choice in the 2015 NFL Draft. It's Shane Ray.
Enter the weed jokes.
Shane Ray was thought to be a Top 10 talent, but his recent marijuana violation saw him drop down teams' boards. He'll reportedly start his NFL career already in the NFL's drug program. There is also a bit of an injury concern there - Ray may need foot surgery, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
But that risk didn't outweigh the potential reward for John Elway, who sees Ray as another weapon in a pass rush that already includes Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.
SB Nation's Stephen White had this to say on Ray:
For as long as I can remember I've seen less skilled, less athletic players who have had their effort showcased as a way to kind of even things out. In this case, Ray is pretty athletic and highly skilled, so that doesn't apply. For him, the fact that he has a fantastic motor isn't the main course, it's the cherry on top.
It's also a long-term move; Miller is only under contract through 2015, and Ware isn't getting any younger.
Still, I'm not a fan of trading up for such a high-risk prospect.
What's your take, Broncos Country?
