MHR's capologist takes a preliminary look at the new mega-deal for Von Miller.

Yippee! Hooray! Von Miller has been signed long term, and we Broncos fans can look forward to watching him wearing the orange and blue while terrorizing opposing quarterbacks for the foreseeable future. Now it's time to look at his contract numbers and how they will impact the Broncos' salary cap in 2016 and future years.

When news of his contract details broke, there were a couple of conflicting sets of numbers, but now the major cap and contract sources seem to be agreeing on numbers and details. So it's time for me to credit and provide links to those sources. They include Mike Klis of KUSA, overthecap.com, spotrac.com, and the NFLPA public salary cap report.

Miller's contract breakdown

Miller's new deal is a six-year contract worth $114.5 million in total potential value, an average of $19.0833 million per year. It contains a $17 million signing bonus, which will prorate at $3.4 million per year over the first five years. There is a $6 million 2016 roster bonus, and the rest of the money consists of base salaries and other miscellaneous bonuses (looks like possible workout bonuses) to be paid out over the course of the contract.

In the contract, $42 million is fully guaranteed (for injury, cap, and skill) at signing, consisting of the $17 million signing bonus, the $6 million 2016 roster bonus, $2 million in 2016 base salary and any miscellaneous bonuses, as well as the $17 million in 2017 base salary and any miscellaneous bonuses. An additional $19 million consisting of the 2018 base salary and any miscellaneous bonuses is initially guaranteed for injury, and it guarantees fully in March 2017, resulting in a total of $61 million of fully guaranteed money in the first two years of the contract. Another $9 million of the 2019 base salary fully guarantees in March 2018, resulting in a total of $70 million of fully guaranteed money in the first three years of the contract.

Year-by-year breakdown:

2016 (Year 1):

In 2016 Von will receive $25 million consisting of the $17 million signing bonus, a $6 million roster bonus, and $2 million in base salary. His cap hit will be $11.4 million, consisting of $3.4 million in prorated signing bonus + the $6 million roster bonus + the $2 million in base salary. Since the price of the franchise tag was $14.129 million, the Broncos just gained $2.729 million in 2016 cap space (14.129 - 11.4 = 2.729). His dead money is $42 million - ALL of the initially fully guaranteed money.

2017 (Year 2):

In 2017 Von will receive $17 million in base salary. His cap hit will be $20.4 million, consisting of the $17 million salary + $3.4 million in prorated signing bonus. If he were to be released prior to the "trigger" date in March for cap or skill issues, the dead money would be $30.6 million (the 2017 salary of $17M + $13.6M in remaining prorated signing bonus). If he were to be released due to injury, or after the "trigger" date in March, the dead money would be $49.6 million since the 2018 salary of $19 million would then be guaranteed.

2018 (Year 3):

In 2018 Von will receive $19 million in base salary. His cap hit will be $22.4 million, consisting of the $19 million salary + $3.4 million in prorated signing bonus. If he were to be released before the "trigger" date in March, the dead money would be $29.2 million (the 2018 salary of $19 million + $10.2 million in remaining prorated signing bonus). If he were to be released after the "trigger" date in March, the dead money would be $38.2 million since $9 million of his 2019 salary would then be guaranteed.

2019 (Year 4):

In 2019 Von will receive $17.5 million in base salary. His cap hit will be $20.9 million consisting of the $17.5 million salary + $3.4M in prorated signing bonus. The dead money would be $15.8 million (the $9 million of his 2019 base salary that became fully guaranteed + $6.8 million in remaining prorated signing bonus).

2020 (Year 5):

In 2020 Von will receive $17.5 million in base salary + a $0.5 million workout bonus. The cap hit will be $21.4 million consisting of $18 million in salary and workout bonus + the last $3.4 million in prorated signing bonus. The dead money would be $3.4 million (the last of the remaining prorated signing bonus).

2021 (Year 6):

In 2021 Von will receive $17.5 million in base salary + a $0.5 million workout bonus. The cap hit will be $18 million. The dead money will be zero.

Additional thoughts and disclaimers about the contract as presented:

Obviously, I cannot guarantee that all these numbers and details are 100 percent correct since I am relying upon reports about the contract and have not seen the actual document. I'm a little surprised that there is no option-year being reported in the contract since Elway has tended to include option years in other recent big contracts.

As presented, this could easily be viewed as a four-year contract for $78.5 million (an average of $19.625 million per year) since the dead money in year five is only $3.4 million. So it would have made sense for 2019 to be an option year that would trigger the final two years of the contract if the option were to be exercised. If something were to go drastically wrong, the Broncos could potentially bail out on the contract after year three since the year four cap hit is $5.1 million more than the year four dead money.

I imagine that the contract probably contains a clause allowing the Broncos to restructure the contract at any time by converting base salary into restructure bonus that would prorate for cap purposes. Players don't generally object to that type of restructure since it takes no money out of their pockets, gives them more guaranteed money up front, and increases their security by increasing potential dead money down the road. Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr. and Demaryius Thomas all have that type of clause in their contracts. I also think spotrac or overthecap should hire me if Elway doesn't since it looks to me like they made some egregious math errors when it came to calculating dead money.

Salary Cap Update:

Prior to Von's contract getting done, the NFLPA Public Salary Cap Report showed the Broncos with $3.370 million in top 51 cap space. Since Von's new 2016 cap hit is $2.729 million less than it would have been under the franchise tag, the Broncos should now have $6.099 million in 2016 cap space. The NFLPA site is often slower to update its numbers than spotrac or Overthecap, but many believe it is more accurate. And to the best of my recollection, Von's deal is the first deal affecting the Broncos 2016 cap since they extended Brandon Marshall, so I'm going to assume that the $3.370 million number was accurate.

Now for the obligatory poll:

Warning: This video contains foul language not suitable for young children or Philip Rivers.

Every time I think Brandon Perna of That's Good Broncos has thought of everything, he discovers how Von Miller would be compensated via other services rendered rather than just straight cash-money.

For services rendered:

9,855 Pelvis Thrusts over 6 seasons.

3,500,000 guaranteed in Chickens over the next 3 seasons.

1,000 Fart fines within the locker room fart fining system. Field farts will not be covered.

Why is this so funny? Because its done with Von thrusting his pelvis in the background. Thank you Brandon, I need a good laugh after the days madness.

Here's to Von Miller making us all happy for the next six years! Just not as a quarterback....

Denver Broncos General Manager John Elway, Denver Broncos Head Coach, and All-Pro linebacker Von Miller comment on the new deal both sides agreed to earlier today.

As you may have heard, the Denver Broncos and star linebacker Von Miller agreed to a six-year, $114.5 million dollar deal earlier today. This deal includes a whopping $70 million dollars in guaranteed money which is the most a non-quarterback has ever received, and the most a Denver Broncos player has ever received.

This at times was a tough deal for both sides to complete. Von and the Broncos brass battled all offseason, but finally, came to an agreement and each side reacted to the deal being completed.

Denver Broncos General Manager John Elway:

"Von’s earned this contract not only for what he’s done in the past but for what we believe he’ll do in the future. This was a long process that ended the way we all wanted—with Von being part of the Denver Broncos for many more years. Our team had a tremendous year last season, and the way Von performed the final few weeks was such a big part of our Super Bowl run. Going forward, we expect great things from Von not only on the field but with the responsibility he has as a leader on the team. I’m proud of how we’ve handled this situation and give credit to everyone on our staff who helped get this done."

Denver Broncos Head Coach Gary Kubiak:

"I know this took a lot of hard work from John and Von to get this done, and we’re thrilled that Von is going to be a Bronco for a long time. I’ve known him since he was a kid in college. Most of all, I’m proud of how far Von’s come as both a person and a player. It’s a great day for him and the organization. We’re all excited to get back to work with Von as a leader of our team."

Super Bowl 50 MVP and Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller:

"I’m super happy and excited to be back with my teammates for the next six years. This is something I really wanted—to stay with the Denver Broncos. I am so appreciative and grateful for this opportunity. I want to thank Mr. Bowlen, Joe Ellis, John Elway and Coach Kubiak for making this possible. I’m also thankful for the way my teammates and our fans have supported me. I’m excited for the future and ready to get back to work."

Here are some pretty cool stats provided from the Denver Broncos about Von Miller.

Von Miller has totaled 60 sacks in his first five seasons in the NFL which ranks him 6th all-time during the span. Reggie White(81), J.J. Watt(74.5), Derrick Thomas (66), DeMarcus Ware 64.5, and Richard Dent (61.5) only have more. This includes Miller's injury/fat/suspension season as well.

Von Miller has played a total of 72 total games in his NFL career and averages 0.83 sacks per game. That ranks him 3rd all time behind J.J. Watt(0.93 sacks per game) and Reggie White(0.85 sacks per game).

Miller is also climbing his way up on the Denver Broncos all-time sack list. Right now he ranks 8th with 60, but could move into the top 3 with a 15 sack season this year. The great Simon Fletcher has the most career sacks in Denver Broncos history with 97.5 sacks.

Right now, Miller is 37.5 sacks behind Fletcher. So if he can stay healthy and continue producing, he could pass Fletcher in about 3 or 4 seasons and become the Broncos all-time sack leader.

Man, it’s great to actually talk about the prospects of football and what Denver may accomplish in the 2016 season.

When Broncos Country first heard the news on Von Miller it should have "Tebowed." Fans need to use this precious time to praise and thank whichever deity they worship that this madness is mercifully over .... until next year when the process starts anew. Yippee!

In the meantime, let that fresh air from the huge sigh of relief rush through your lungs. Miller, as most level-headed individuals have said for months, is the new face of the Denver Broncos and will remain so for the remainder of his career.

The manufactured drama, reactionary journalism, rumors and speculation on what could happen with Miller and the Broncos is flushed away like the messy turd it is. Just don’t tell Mike Florio or certain members of the local media that John Elway did in fact extend Miller. It’s like telling a kid Santa Claus isn’t real.

As Elway is proven to do, he gets his man. And you shouldn’t be surprised by this in the least. This is what the Broncos executive vice president and general manager does. See: Matt Prater, Ryan Clady and Demaryius Thomas.

Did people really think Elway wouldn’t re-sign his first draft pick? The guy who has the potential to go down as one of the greatest to play his position? The guy who just put forth one of the greatest, if not the greatest, postseason performances for a defensive player in NFL history? The guy who just led Denver to its third Super Bowl? Really?

Miller is a once-in-a-generation player. You don’t let those guys go. And there was no chance that Elway would let Miller out of Denver. Ever. Under any circumstance.

The manufactured drama, reactionary journalism, rumors and speculation on what could happen with Miller and the Broncos is flushed away like the messy turd it is.

It may not have come as fast as people may like or think it should have, but they need to get over it. The continued criticism that Elway is cheap ends here. The nonsensical argument that it will eventually catch up to him holds no water. It’s more fake drama. Worse, it comes from "media" types who want to show how tough and contrarian they are. Right on cue, the stories and hot takes now saying Elway got "owned" or "overpaid" and he's too mean in negotiations have arrived.

The other aspect in all of this: who is to say Miller would have signed early? This isn't Madden where you just hit "re-sign" and "boom" it's done. That's not how this works. For those who say Miller would have signed in March or April, that's a huge assumption to make.

The "stingy," "hard-stance" reputation will catch up with Elway, just like it has with Bill Belichick.

News flash: Compared to other professional sports leagues, the NFL as a whole is cheap and treats its players like garbage. You know who takes the brunt of the blame for that? The NFL Players Association. But that’s a topic for another day.

Regardless of how the Miller contract situation played out and the crap you’ve heard in between, and still do until July 28, Miller’s No. 58 will remain in orange for the next half decade, if not the rest of his NFL career. And that’s all that matters.

What’s incredible to think about is Miller hasn’t even scratched the surface on what he can accomplish in the NFL. His postseason run was both historic and magical. What he did in the AFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl is now branded in NFL lore.

As his role model, DeMarcus Ware, will no doubt tell him (if he hasn’t already): He can get even better. He can put himself in the conversation as one of the all-time greats.

If that isn’t motivation enough for Miller, there are those who think a certain pass rusher in Oakland is better than he is. Coupled with Wade Phillips and the best defense in the league on his side, Miller is poised for a historic follow up to his postseason performance.

The one major criticism of Miller before his dominance in the playoffs was consistency. The off-the-field garbage is no longer a factor. It’s been stated numerous times since last August when it was announced, but it bears repeating. Miller is no longer in the NFL’s substance abuse program. At all. He’s no longer subject to multiple tests a week or faces suspension if he were to test positive again. That won’t happen but it shows how hard he’s worked to right his life from where he was three years ago.

As for the consistency issue, whether you agree, it had life. In my mind, the biggest reason why people could levy that against Miller is because of Jack Del Rio and his defensive scheme. You remember, the one where Miller covers Rob Gronkowski on the goal line and defensive backs play off receivers 45 yards? And people think Khalil Mack will shine for the Raiders ... well, maybe if he plays Michael Schofield and Brock Osweiler all 16 games.

Miller ended all of the consistency criticism with what he did in the playoffs.

The goal now is to build on that and do it in the regular season, and then again in the postseason on the way to back-to-back Super Bowl titles. With what Miller and the Broncos defense accomplished in the first season of a new system, they expect to be even better.

Man, it’s great to actually talk about the prospects of football and what Denver may accomplish in the 2016 season. With Miller as the face of the Broncos.

Let the real drama commence.

The Broncos signed their reigning Super Bowl MVP and their new face of the franchise.

According to Rand Getlin, the Denver Broncos have signed linebacker Von Miller to a six-year, $114.5 million deal that includes $70 million in guaranteed money by March 2018.

The Super Bowl 50 MVP is staying in Denver for many years to come.

After a long offseason of drama between the two sides that included Von Miller stating he will not play under the Franchise Tag, the Broncos and Miller got something done before the July 15th deadline.

The sticking point in the contract talks was all about the guaranteed money. The Broncos initial offer to Miller back in June lacked in that department, and since then the two sides traded multiple proposals. Thankfully they were able to find a middle ground and agree to a deal before the July 15th deadline.

Miller was in a contract year in 2015, and boy did he earn himself every penny of this deal. He had a total of 11 sacks and 4 forced fumbles during the season but really turned it on for the postseason. He totaled 11 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 interception in three games this postseason.

The supreme edge rusher helped the Broncos' defense stop the explosive Pittsburgh Steelers offense, and he dominated the Patriots offensive line, making life a living hell for Tom Brady.

He didn't stop there. Miller completely dominated in the Super Bowl, setting the tone early on and applying the dagger in the big game by forcing two fumbles from the MVP Cam Newton. Von was a big reason why the Broncos won their third Super Bowl and no one else deserved the Super Bowl 50 MVP award more than him.

His career numbers look just as great.

Miller has played five seasons (one shortened by suspension and injury) in the NFL and has racked up some impressive stats. During those five seasons, he has totaled 260 tackles, 60 sacks, 1 interception, and 17 forced fumbles.

Also, in seven career postseason games, Miller has totaled 31 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 interception.

It just made too much sense to lock up Miller for years to come. Players like him do not come around often, and if he keeps up this pace, Miller will one day end up in Canton, and his plaque will be in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.

I'm looking forward to seeing Von terrorize quarterbacks, make game-changing plays, and continue his Hall Of Fame career in orange and blue.

It's happening!

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Denver Broncos and star linebacker Von Miller are making significant progress toward a deal. Rapoport says it is a six-year deal worth $114 million that eclipses $70 million in guarantees.

If the reports of this deal are true, Miller will become the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history, and also become the highest paid Denver Broncos player in history.

It's unknown exactly how this deal will be structured, but there are reports/rumors that the first two years of the deal will have most of the guaranteed money.

After a long drawn-out process that had the Broncos leaking Miller's first proposal numbers out, Von cropping John Elway out of an Instagram photo, Von saying he won't play under the Franchise Tag, and even some trade rumors were spun up by the media, but at the end of the day, the Denver Broncos got their man signed(or soon to be signed).

Eric Goodman from The Afternoon Drive talked about what Von Miller's actual value might be and the number $65 million guaranteed came up. That seemed fairly reasonable, so to hear that its a bit over $70 million makes me feel like John Elway and the Broncos really value Miller and want him to be that Broncos for life people have talked about. This deal is getting done.

All the rest of the Franchise Tagged players look to remain unsigned before Friday's 4 p.m. ET deadline(maybe Chiefs safety Eric Berry gets his done) and yet all we heard was how the Broncos and Von were at each others throat.
