Now everyone knows about how good the Denver Broncos defense is. It was a good statement game.

Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro from The Afternoon Drive caught up with Denver Broncos nose tackle Domata Peko on Monday to talk about their big win and their upcoming opponent next week.

Peko alluded that the defense was sick of hearing about how good Ezekiel Elliott and that Cowboys offensive line is all week leading up to the game, which provided plenty of motivation.

Whatever questions we had about the Broncos run defense are now answered, but just how good can this run defense be?

In a game filled with huge plays, there was on that just stood out all on its own. C.J. Anderson’s 28 yard run was a tone-setter.

Late in the first quarter during the Denver Broncos 42-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, C.J. Anderson took a handoff and proceeded to bowl through every defender that tried to put their hands on him.

The drive led to a missed field goal from Brandon McManus, but the outcome of the drive was less important than the message the Broncos offense sent to the Cowboys defense. That’s why this 28-yard run gets my “play of the week” this week.

The Denver Broncos completely outclassed the Dallas Cowboys on third downs.

That was fun to watch. Yes, I’ll admit I was a little nervous after they tied it up at 7 off a strip-sack fumble and then Cody Latimer fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but that nervousness faded is our defense continued to do what they did for most of the game - dominate. They dominated in a manner that we hadn’t seen since the 2015 D turned the Panthers in meek little kittens in super bowl 50. This game however we more than just our defense making a statement, this was our whole team making a statement, and that statement was “Our defense is still elite and now we have an offense to go with it.”

On to the numbers:

Stopping first down runs.

The Cowboys decided that rather than try to run the ball against us, they would attempt to prove that Dak Prescott could win the game by throwing on the No Fly Zone. On their first two offensive possessions they threw the ball on first down. It wasn’t until their third possession that they ran the ball on first down - Elliot up the middle for two yards. By the time they got around to trying to establish their running game they were down by 14 points - a situation that they rarely faced with their creampuff schedule in 2016.

For the game they only attempted 5 runs on first down, gaining 13 yards with Rod Smith’s (no, not THAT Rod Smith) gaining most of those on a 4th quarter run for 8 yards. Ezekial Elliot had three runs on first down for a total of -1 yard. This was domination by our front 7. I’m sure that some Cowboys fans will try to argue that the Cowboys could have run the ball if they had tried earlier to do so, but that’s like when my child tries to convince me they haven’t been eating oreo cookies when I can see them on their teeth. For the game the vaunted Cowboys rushing attack was held to 40 yards on 14 carries (2.86 ypc).

For the season we have now allowed 63 yards on 18 first down runs with 21 on those coming on the first first down run we faced this year. That is 3.5 ypc on first down runs for the year. Since that 21 yard run, we have only allowed 2.47 ypc on first down runs. That’s doing some work particularly against a team that wants to make running the ball their strength (LAC) and a team that was the best in the league at running the ball a year ago (DAL).

Stopping the opponent on 3rd & long

The Cowboys did a decent job of staying out of 3rd and long situations by throwing short passes that negated the pass rush somewhat, but when we did get them in 3rd and long situations we shut them down.

We held them to 0 for 5 on 3rd and long and 3 of 14 overall on third downs. For the season we have now allowed 2 conversions on 10 3rd and longs (20%). Were we to maintain that level of performance for the entire season, it would be the best that our defense has done since I have been tracking this stat.

Moving forward

Next week we go to Buffalo to play against our old offensive coordinator in Rick Dennison. I’m sure that the D is going to have fun dismantling uncle Rico’s offense. I also think that Mike McCoy is going to want to show uncle Rico just what you can do with skill position players like Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Trevor Siemian, Virgil Green and C.J. Anderson. I’m leery of a let-down after two big games in a row, but I think this team is hungry and I don’t think our coaching staff or our players are going to take the Bills lightly.

The Denver Broncos bucked the Dallas Cowboys all over the Mile High city on Sunday afternoon. Here are my thoughts, opinions, and analysis on what we saw and can take away from this sweet, sweet victory.

Uhm...allas? allas? You okay? I think may have lost your D.

It has been quite some time since I’ve seen the Denver Broncos lay the wood down on an opponent like they did in this game. 42 - 17 is a beating of epic proportions. Add to it that it was against the media darling Dallas Cowboys, and you have what I call a statement game.

Not that this means the world, mind you. Denver is no shoe in for the post-season, let alone anything past that...this was only one game in week 2 of the NFL season after all. But what this game says to the NFL at large is that you better stand up and take notice. The Broncos just took one of the most historically prolific rushing attacks in recent history and absolutely shut them down. The best runner in the NFL was held to 8 yards on 9 attempts. Conversely, the Broncos offense was marching up and down the field almost at will against what was one of the poorest showings of NFL defense I’ve witnessed in the past year.

Talk about Denver being an AFC West basement dweller in 2017 is so much hot air being blown about by division rivals and people who don’t care what happens west of the Mississippi.

Defense

Welcome to the NFL, Joe Woods. As a Bronco fan, I must say that I really, really want you to just stay here and run our defense for a few years. But if you keep this up, you’ll be a head coach candidate in short order.

It wasn’t just that our defense is stocked with talent (which it is), but our coordinator called a simply exquisite game plan against an opponent that didn’t know what to do with themselves from an offensive standpoint for most of the first half of the game. We had exotic personnel packages. We stacked the box. We blitzed creatively from nickel personnel.

Joe Woods isn’t just some dude that was lucky enough to inherit a defense from Wade Phillips and just tell them to keep playing the scheme. He looks to me like a true student of the game who is a creative game planner and shot caller on the sidelines.

Front 7

There’s a lot of hype going on with Von Miller...and there definitely should be. It took until the 2nd half for him to really get cooking, but he had what was a simply amazing game as a defender. 2 sacks, 2 TFL, 5 QH, and 1 PD. He’s such a well rounded player at this point in his career.

Shaquil Barrett is a guy that really should get more notice though as the Robin to Von Miller’s Batman. He was a stud being in on 7 tackles with a QH and lots and lots of pressures that never will see the stat sheet. If Shane Ray gets healthy and gets put in as a starter ahead of Barrett, it will be solely because of where he was drafted. At this point, Shaquil deserves to stay the starter with how well he is holding down his edge and being a disruptive force as a pass rusher.

I do love to talk about the guys who don’t get the flashy stats, but handle the dirty work up front. Domata Peko is such a huge upgrade in the middle of the line from what we saw last year. He’s chewing up blockers and holding ground at the point of attack consistently. When a team completely nullifies a potent rushing offense, it almost always can be attributed to guys like Peko and Adam Gotsis doing the dirty work on the interior.

Secondary

Chris Harris Jr. put on a clinic. It is that simple. He played safety. He played corner on either side. He also covered the slot on the inside at times. I’m going to go ahead and say this: Chris Harris Jr is THE most talented secondary defender the NFL has to offer bar none and it isn’t even close. His versatility, smarts, and athletic skill are simply extraordinary. Any of you with NFL Rewind that want a real treat, just pull up the coach’s film and follow 25. CLINIC

Not to be outdone was Aqib Talib who also showed his prowess in taking on one of the most physically gifted WRs the game has to offer and making him look like a guy running routes in molasses. He dropped what were two easy interceptions, but kept at it and put the cherry on top of the poop sundae for Cowboys by taking a pick in the end zone the distance.

One of the few spots of criticism I have this week is Justin Simmons who got absolutely smoked on TD pass late in the game. His coverage looked shaky at times and it looked to me like he isn’t doing well at read / react time. Hopefully a game like this will serve to provide him with some much needed experience and film that he can use to hone his craft.

Offense

Mike McCoy has this offense absolutely humming early in the season. A good offense in the NFL takes a banged up defense like what the Cowboys put on the field this weekend and puts them through the ringer from start to finish.

This offense didn’t punt until the 4th quarter. They converted 60% of their 3rd down attempts (with 7many of the failures coming in garbage time). The Bronco offense got 26 first downs in this game. That is simply disgusting.

In all honesty, the Broncos faced a Divsion II college defense (with a few exceptions) and made them look that bad. Oh yeah, and they did it with a 7th round draft pick at QB.

Quarterbacks

Trevor Siemian early is really impressing me with his grasp of the offense. He’s smart with the ball, audibling into good plays fairly consistently, and throwing some very impressive passes. Against the soft zone looks that Rod Marinelli drew up, Siemian absolutely carved it up until nothing was left other than hopes, dreams, and fairy tales of what could have been.

Yes, there was the token bad interception, but let’s be fair: that was very likely on DT running the wrong route from what I saw.

A very big key to the Broncos 2017 season is going to be protecting Trevor Siemian. He’s starting to look like a young treasure at QB and if the team can keep him healthy, the sky's the limit with what this offense can do.

Line

Menelik Watson did not take the steps forward in this game that I was looking for. He’s a guy that looks a step behind most of the time on the field and it just isn’t going to get any easier as the season wears on. He’s going to have to block the Justin Houston and Khalil Mack’s of the NFL and from what I’m seeing so far, he’s going to make them all look like All-Pros.

Also, Garett Bolles needs to stop freaking me out. I thought the dude’s foot was ripped off and swallowed by a rabid wombat by the way he got carted off the field. Thank the stars and God above that it was just a high ankle sprain and bone bruise. The Broncos can’t afford to lose the rookie when the tackle across the way is playing as poorly as we’ve seen.

Did you notice that Andre Barbre came in at left tackle instead of Donald Stephenson? I did...because I noticed right away the left side of the line was still holding up fairly well and knew that something smelled fishy. I’d be curious to see if we see Barbre at RT when Bolles returns.

The whole line honestly were ballers. They got such good push consistently all game long. The Broncos averaged 4.6 yards per carry on the day (which got fairly dragged down by 5 rushes by Siemian). They put up 178 yards of rushing offense on allas in the most impressive work I’ve seen by a Bronco line since the 2015 playoffs.

Running Backs

C.J. Anderson looked like a legit NFL work horse stud. He looked like what you would expect from Ezekiel Elliott, honestly. I really liked what I saw from him in open space as he was really showing off some nifty running angles. He rushed for a TD and caught one as well on a superb play design that got him in space underneath clearing routes.

Jamaal Charles has yet to show that he’s still got “it”, but what he has shown in both games is a guy who can step in and be a very solid #2 back. He averaged 5.1 yards on 9 attempts with a long of 14 which is a very consistent statline for a guy not getting a lot of the carries.

Receivers

Demaryius Thomas is a guy who looks to me like he’s getting back to playing more like his size. He’s using his God-given gifts to be an easy target for Siemian that just keeps moving the chains and getting chunks of yards in the passing game.

Emmanuel Sanders was really showing off some nice hands in this game. He saw just as many targets as DT did, but was the guy who got the end zone looks with 2 TD grabs. He had a catch along the sideline in the 2nd half that was a thing of beauty that he caught with his fingers while falling to the ground.

There’s still no one guy stepping up at tight end to be “The Man”, but we still saw excellent production from the unit with a lot of nice catches in the middle of the field from both Virgil Green and Jeff Heuerman.

Special Teams

Isaiah McKenzie is going to take one the distance this season. I was very impressed with the change of direction he showed on his long return in the 1st half. Almost as impressive was the blocking from the rest of the special teams unit as none of them got a penalty for a block in the back.

Final Thoughts

That was a gratifying win, but I would advise all of Broncos Country to not let this game mean too much. I’m not just talking trash when I say the Broncos didn’t really face a defense this week. They just weren’t a real test of NFL football and as the season wears on teams are getting more and more film of the Broncos offense. I find it unlikely that we’ll see many more blowouts like this outside of maybe the Bills and the Jets this year.

The good part about this game is that it gives the team a lot of building blocks to work with and a blueprint to work towards. If they can keep jumping out to leads on teams and maintain it into the 2nd half, this defense will absolutely steamroll some poor fools.

One thing I do find legit from this game is the play of our defense. The Cowboys have no excuses for our defense being that successful. Offense is what they do well and we completely shut everything they wanted to do completely down. The only reason they scored anything of significance was because of short fields off turnovers. Denver’s defense has returned to the level of excellent play we saw in 2015.

With play like that we can absolutely beat anybody. Who’s next?

But it was the gamesmanship and ‘coaching up’ from the coaching staffs that ultimately led this team to 2-0.

The Broncos-Cowboys matchup wasn’t just a professional football game.

It was personal.

At least that’s what players told Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro on The Afternoon Drive after the game.

And when players take it personally, they also take it to another level.

“I had all the faith in the guys in this locker room. We prepped our tails off all week,” said Ronald Leary. “We knew this was a big game. The Cowboys are contenders. We took it personal them coming into our house. We wanted to show em we’re contenders also.”

No way the Cowboys don’t agree with that sentiment after the 42-17 spanking they received at Mile High.

And that was exactly what the Broncos were hoping to accomplish, Chris Harris Jr. told Shapiro and Goodman.

“We took the whole game personally. I think everybody was ready for a fistfight to show the world who we are on defense,” Harris Jr. said. “Nobody picked us. We didn’t get one pick. We wanted to show we’re the real deal on the secondary ...Just wanted to show them.”

But if the Sunday game showcased a much-improved defensive line and a much-improving offensive line, it also showed some serious gamesmanship and coaching up from the offensive and defensive coaches and their assistants.

Harris Jr. was thrilled to sing the praises of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Because the cornerback knows that if his offense is scoring points, then he and Aqib Talib are going to be busy as teams will be forced to go through the air to catch up.

“Mike McCoy is one of the best offensive coordinators I’ve been around. Once we learn not to have costly turnovers at crucial times and finish the game and step on people’s throats…once we do that, we’re going to be tough to beat.” - Chris Harris Jr.

And any team needing to air it out to beat the Broncos is going to have a really hard time getting clearance in the No Fly Zone.

“It’s great to have these guys being able to put up points, man. Mike McCoy is one of the best offensive coordinators I’ve been around,” Harris Jr. said. “Once we learn not to have costly turnovers at crucial times, man - at crucial times - and finish the game and step on people’s throats…once we do that, we’re going to be tough to beat.”

And that “tough to beat” component has really impressed Les Shapiro and Eric Goodman the most.

“That offensive cooridinator has milked all the talent out of the players on the offensive side of the ball,” Goodman said, adding kudos to Joe Woods and Brock Olivo too. “So credit to John Elway in hiring great coaches to maximize the talent on the roster. All really good hires.”

Shapiro - who had been skeptical of whether the Broncos defense could remain elite this year, even if mostly sure that it could - became a believer on Sunday.

“What turned my head was Joe Woods’ game plan on defense. It was great.,” Shapiro said, adding it bothered him immensely last season when Gary Kubiak and Rick Dennison would run the same offense, play in and play out. “But here we saw Joe Woods – a guy with a great defense – still taking advantage, attacking. ...Joe Woods attacks. It’s kind of fun to watch.”

Basically, the Denver Broncos dominated the Dallas Cowboys in all three phases of the game.

All week the national media made the Dallas Cowboys look like a Super Bowl contender who would waltz into Denver and put the beat down on an inferior Denver Broncos squad.

Quite the opposite occurred as the Broncos defense came out playing with the kind of intensity it had during the 2015 Super Bowl run, while the offense came out and played like the Star Wars offense Peyton Manning ran in 2013.

The result was a 42-17 smashing of preconceived notions of the 2017 season.

If we had enough staff, we’d give game balls to just about everyone in this game. Here’s who we were able to reward today.

Trevor Siemian

Part of me wants to just say "if you're reading these, you've seen the game. His game spoke for itself." when saying that Trevor Siemian gets my game ball. But I suppose I'll write something. 231 yards and 4 TDs. No, those aren't Aaron Rodgers numbers, those are Trevor Siemian's numbers.

I know Dallas fans will say that they were down to their waterboy playing corner with the injuries, but you know what? Good QBs play great when they need to, and play great when given the opportunity to. If Siemian wasn't a good QB, he wouldn't have taken advantage of the opportunities afforded him. Plus he threw some really really nice balls, and showed mobility with a few first downs and key runs to shorten the down and distance.

All in all, I'm getting very comfortable with Siemian as our QB. So much so that I'm about ready to say we may never see Paxton Lynch play a snap for our team barring injury. As in, ever. Trevor, keep it up, you are looking like a true franchise QB. And after tonight, unless Stafford throws for more than 2TD, guess who will be #1 in the NFL in touchdowns after 2 weeks? Our very own Trevor Siemian. I'm not saying he'll be the next Montana or Brady, but man, in 10 years when the next up and coming "game manager" QB is lighting it up, the conversation might turn to "he may not be the next Brady, Montana, or Siemian, but he looks really good." - Pete Baron

C.J. Anderson

118 rushing yards and a touchdown. 36 receiving yards and a touchdown. C.J. Anderson was a beast against the Dallas Cowboys. More than his stat, it was they way he ran. He was a wrecking ball, pushing piles, moving the chains, and helping to keep the offense on the field. Anderson has always been a strong runner. Sunday was his biggest performance since 2015, and the statement made was that the Broncos are a force to be reckoned with.

You can point to several reasons the Broncos beat the Cowboys. The passing attack was solid, the blocking was the best it's been in a long time. The defense consistently stopped the run. In the end, it all came down to attitude. That attitude started with Anderson bowling balling his way around the field. - Adam Malnati

Von Miller

In a game showcasing a Broncos' run defense that decimated the league's heretofore best rushing attack, the "Von Miller Effect" could have gone unnoticed. But Pro Football Focus certainly noticed...as did Dak Prescott.

Posting an 89.6 overall grade this week - second highest among all edge defenders - Miller's 22.6 pass rushing productivity was second-best in the league this weekend, totaling a league high 12 pressures, two sacks, two QB hits, and eight QB hurries, plus one batted pass.

And the Broncos' record books certainly noticed too, as Miller passed Barney Chavous for third on the team's all-time sack list. - Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann

Chris Harris Jr.

For his career Dak Prescott has a quarterback rating of 100.6, last week at home against the New York Giants he had a 90.5, this week against the Broncos he had a 68.6 and against Chris Harris Jr. he had an 8.9. See how the great Dak Prescott only gets worse the closer that he gets to Harris? Prescott doltishly tested Harris eight times, Harris allowed three catches for 29 yards. He also had an interception, two pass defenses, six solo tackles and played center fielder on Denver's stack defense which employed three defensive backs including Harris at safety. - Ian Henson

Aqib Talib

The story of the week will be (rightly so) the Denver run defense holding Zeke Elliot to less rushing yards than Tom Brady had this week. But the scheme that allowed that to happen is only possible because of guys like Aqib Talib in the secondary. Denver essentially lined Talib up on Dez Bryant all day and said, "have fun", and he did. The trust Denver placed in their corners, and those guys' effectiveness allowed them to commit more bodies to the run game to shut down the best running attack in the league.

Dez Bryant got the better of the matchup for one score on a tough back shoulder throw, but after that, it was Bryant who was playing DB more often than not. Talib was running Dez's route for him and almost hauled in two interceptions throughout the game, until he finally snatched Dak Prescott's throw into the end zone and ran it back all the way for his 10th pick six of his career.

Ronald Leary

So last season, the Cowboys defense was pretty good in run defense (11th in ypc allowed, 1st in rushing yards allowed - which is all the announcers wanted to talk about), so I'm sure that Ronald Leary had something to prove to his old defensive teammates yesterday.

He wanted to show them that they never had to face him as a run blocker. He proved that the 2017 Broncos running game is most definitely not the 2016 Broncos running game as he paved the way to 178 rushing yards on 39 carries (4.6 ypc). This would have been a larger ypc value if not for the end of the game runs where the Cowboys had 12 men in the box.

Leary also had two tackles in the game, one on the fumble and one on the interception, which was the same number of tackles that Von Miller was credited. And if his run blocking and tackling prowess were not enough, he was also darn good as a pass blocker not allowing a single QB hit this game (Siemian was only hit 4 times outside of the two sacks, three of the hits were the fault of Watson and the other was on Garcia or Barbre if I remember correctly). - Joe Mahoney

Emmanuel Sanders

Last week Trevor Siemian and Emmanuel Sanders just couldn't seem to get on the same page, especially during critical throws into the endzone. They must have studied up, because this week that connection was humming. Sanders matched Demaryius Thomas for a game-high 6 catches, but while DT got more yards it was Sanders who hauled in the touchdowns. Sanders found a gap near the back of the endzone, and Siemian dropped a dime to to him over triple coverage for the first score of the game.

And with less than 2 minutes left in the first half, Sanders ran a pivot route that got him wide open for Siemian as the QB completed a play-action rollout. Throw in four more catches, often with a generous side of YAC, and it was a good day and a nice bounceback for #10. - Taylor Kothe

Mike McCoy

My game ball goes to Mike McCoy. It is completely obvious to me and anyone who is a fan of the game that the Denver Broncos have completely flipped the script on the offensive side of the ball. Where they were in 2016 completely predictable, they are now completely unpredictable. They are using the entire field in both the run and pass games. The offense doesn't key in on a small handful of players, but is utilizing all of the weapons that are dressing on game day. The players know it to as was obvious from their answers in the press conferences. Mike McCoy is an NFL weapon and he game planned a completely massacre on Sunday afternoon against the Dallas Cowboys. - Sadaraine

Broncos Defensive Line

Tom Brady finished with nine yards rushing on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. In most cases that’s not significant to Denver. Who gives a shit what Brady does? This is an exception to that general notion. Brady finished with more yards rushing than Ezekiel Elliott.

In fact, the Cowboys running back had more carries (nine) than he did yards (eight). That’s a direct result of how dominant the Broncos defensive line was in this game. No matter the game plan the coaches concoct, the players have to execute. Domata Peko, Derek Wolfe, Adam Gotsis, Shelby Harris and the others humiliated the vaunted Dallas offensive line. They made the Cowboys look soft and weak. Even that is an understatement.

In the biggest test to date, Denver’s front not only aced it, but sent a message: We will beat you down until you’re ours. Here’s where it gets fun for the Broncos - they did this without Zack Kerr and Ahtyba Rubin. Good luck to LeSean McCoy and the Buffalo Bills, you’ll need it. - Ian St. Clair

When Wade Phillips moved on, there was worry the Broncos defense would miss his 40+ years of NFL experience. The Broncos just weren’t willing to take the risk of losing Joe Woods who was the architect of the No Fly Zone and made the decision to promote him to defensive coordinator.

Through two games, it sure looks like John Elway made the right decision. This defense is as ferocious as ever and Broncos Country excitement is growing with each impressive performance. - Tim Lynch

Broncos got some good news regarding their first-round pick.

According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, Denver Broncos rookie left tackle Garett Bolles suffered a high ankle sprain/deep bone bruise during Sunday’s blowout victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Initially, it looked like Bolles suffered a serious ankle injury just going off his reaction and being placed on the cart. He was also seen in a walking boot and on crutches after the game. So the Broncos, the fans, and likely Bolles feared the worst. Thankfully, Bolles escaped major injury and will only miss a handful of games.

He is out for this weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills and likely also out for the Broncos big divisional matchup against the Oakland Raiders in two weeks. They, however, do have an early bye week after the Raiders game, so Bolles could be good to go by the time the Broncos take the field in week six against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.

In the meantime, look for Donald Stephenson and/or Alan Barbre to replace Bolles at left tackle in the starting lineup. Stephenson replaced Bolles immediately but Barbe eventually filled in and played snaps there as well. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if the Broncos make any roster moves to sure up that position going forward.

Thankfully for Bolles and the Broncos, this will only be a few week deal. High ankle sprains are tricky, but I’d target week six against the New York Giants as the point where Bolles will be ready to go once again.
