Is it likely? Who cares? Our ultimate fan prefers optimism, and that’s good enough for me. Go Broncos!

Well, ultimate fans, it’s the last game, and while a bunch of fans may not show up for the home finale at Mile High today, we know you are showing up. And although we almost had a no-show for the UFG, OrangeandBluesBros came off the bench as backup to make sure we have a UFG finale. And it turns out he was the perfect choice as he is picking an upset over the Chiefs. LOVE IT!

So a HUGE thanks to OABB for that and for just generally being one of the most reliable readers and commenters on this post every week. I really appreciate you and the loyal readers for this post in particular! AND then let me also say another gigantic THANK YOU to each of the participants this season. It really is a fun series for me to do and always lifts my spirits about the team, whether they’re playing well or not. You guys have been funny and insightful and heroic in your support. Mile High Salute to you!

Unfortunately, this has been another bummer of a season for the team, but as any fan from the 60s will remind you, there are brighter days ahead and turning around a program doesn’t happen overnight. We will get there, Broncos Country. At some point.

Maybe it will be today against the Chiefs. But even if it isn’t, that’s no reason not to support some of the future stars on the field today.

GO BRONCOS!

Week 18: Chiefs at Broncos

MHR - One. More. Game. And it means nothing…again. Or does it? How are you looking at this matchup against the Chiefs? Is there hope for a surprising win? What will be worth watching?
OrangeandBluesBros: Final exam time, not just for me on Laurie’s probing questionnaire, but for Lock and Fangio. Shurmur and McMahon already failed and are just marking time until the axe falls. This season repeat is time to send the Chefs packing (they are packing for the playoffs, but will not be staying home right away because they will not get the No. 1 seed). The Broncos win this one. Fangio’s defense held them to a relatively low score last time and could have won if they could only score points. The Broncos score enough points this time to get it done. What’s that you say, something about orange and blue kool-aid? Yes, and it tastes good, they even have a name for it in a song: Bam, bam, bam, bam bam, TEQUILA. I’ve picked the Broncos to win every week of the season and I’m not going to stop now. They have a chance and the game definitely will be worth watching.

MHR - You have been a longtime fan. Although it has been a minute since the team has had five years in a row of losing seasons, what advice do you have for Broncos Country on hanging in there with this franchise?
OrangeandBluesBros: You know, I don’t get it with the fans who predict Broncos losses. Why pick the Broncos to lose and be miserable all week, or in some cases all year and be miserable for all that pre-game time? Following in the tradition of Pat Bowlen, I pick the Broncos to win and make them disappoint me if they don’t win. Then I can be optimistic all week and only be down the day after the game. Believe me, I am really down after a Broncos loss, enough that I try to stay away from people to avoid snapping at them. After all, isn’t that what we expect from our players? Blow it off and move on.

Why pick the Broncos to lose and be miserable all week, or in some cases all year? Following in the tradition of Pat Bowlen, I pick the Broncos to win and make them disappoint me if they don’t. Then I can be optimistic all week.” - OrangeandBluesBros

MHR - Obligatory Drew Lock question: How did you feel about his performance in the game against the Chargers, despite the loss? He believes he is good enough to be an NFL starter and that he’s shown that in just a few games. Do you agree? Would you like to see him be the starter here?
OrangeandBluesBros: The obligatory pre-comment statement: I am not a Lock fan or a Lock detractor. I want every QB for the Broncos to play well. However, did not get to see much of Lock play this year and missed both Chargers games because I live out of state (Florida) and its difficult to watch a game live with the Covid thing going around and trying to avoid crowds, like in sports bars, especially when they only have the Broncos game on one TV and you have to crane your neck to see around a cornet just to catch a glimpse of the game. If the games are early, 10 am MT, I have a place I can go, but almost all the Broncos games are the late game and that locale that shows the games closes ½ hour into the late games (5 pm ET). So the following comments are based upon what I read and replays when I can catch them on NFL Net (which shows a minute of most teams plays, but only 5 seconds of a bronco game and then only if the play favors the team we are playing. I think Drew isn’t as accurate as he thinks he is and relies on receivers to make good or great catches. He is good enough to be a starter for an NFL team, but he needs more seasoning (development). He is certainly better than Siemian, Sloter, and others that are still around playing back up in the NFL. I’d like to see how good he is when he gets that development. I’d like to see him try again to be a starter here in competition with other good QBs that can ensure a high baseline for performance if he falters, maybe a contract for a veteran that has performance clauses in it, so if Lock beats them out the broncos aren’t on the hook for too much money with someone playing back up or not at all.

MHR - The offense moved the ball better last week but still failed to score much when down in the red zone. Listening to Pat Shurmur, this happenstance is just the way it is sometimes and better execution is needed. What percentage of our offensive woes would you place on each of these - Shurmur’s scheme; the quarterback(s); the talent level of the offense?
OrangeandBluesBros: Shurmur is talking in circles as he throws players under the bus. If Shurmur wants better execution, he should coach better. Shurmur also should be better at matching the plays to both the players strengths and to the situation on the field. The talent is there to work with. Maybe Shurmur needs someone behind him with their arms coming through to shape the offense like the actors in the movie “Ghost” spinning a clay pot. There’s an image for you. What ever happened to that coach named Bill Musgrave who could design great plays but didn’t know when to call them? Maybe we can have an OC committee with play designers and an overall OC to actually call they plays (not Shurmur, I mean someone who can understand the situation and figure out which incredible play his committee came up with to apply to the situation and don’t be predictable. Anyway, the percentage is 80% Shurmer’s scheme, 10% the QB, and 10 % on talent (mostly the O line downgrading the rest of the talent).

MHR - Javonte Williams has had a monster of a season along with a rather quietly strong one from Melvin Gordon as well. Kansas City has often given up a lot of yards to Denver’s running backs…could they both get 100 yards against the Chiefs on Sunday? Or at least combine for a great day of rushing?
OrangeandBluesBros: I love seeing the “Angry Run” competition on NFL Net and Javonte has won it a couple times, once with the help of Meinerz. MG has been great, except for the critical fumbles (deep in our own territory and in the red zone after a terrific drive that ended in no points). I don’t know about scoring 200 yards split between them against the Chefs, but they can certainly combine for close to 200 yards and keep the Chefs guessing as we mix in some good passing to keep them from crowding the line.

MHR - One of the biggest frustrations of this passing offense has been its inefficiency - the “short of the sticks” throws by Bridgewater or the airmail passes from Lock. Is it possible for Lock and his receivers to air it out against the Chiefs and have an explosive game to at least try and keep up with the Mahomeses?
OrangeandBluesBros: Actually, I don’t mind the “short of the sticks” approach as long as they don’t do it all the time and the play is to someone who can turn the play into a “beyond the sticks” result. Other teams do that too. The ones I hate are the ones that are behind the line of scrimmage and the defense knows it’s coming which results in a loss of yards. Lock needs to hit receivers all over the field, short of the sticks, beyond the sticks, and way beyond the sticks. Set up a receiver short of the sticks, draw the defense in, fake the short, and throw it long, maybe to one of our streaking tall receivers who can take it to the house (Sutton, Patrick, Fant, Albert O, hell even Jeudy). Yes, its possible to “air it out” against the Chefs and I hope the Broncos do that, but I hope Mahomes doesn’t keep up with us because he’s throwing interceptions and Lock is not..

MHR - Denver will get back 12 players from the COVID list but will still be without its two starting corners, rookie sensation Pat Surtain and Ronald Darby. How could that impact what the Chiefs can do downfield?
OrangeandBluesBros: Well, of course, the Chefs will be taking shots at the remaining CBs downfield, but how successful that is depends on how much time our defense gives him to do it. I hope our pass rush can pressure Mahomes just enough to make it easier for the CBs.

MHR - The Broncos have struggled mightily to pressure quarterbacks since losing Von Miller to the Rams. Are Bradley Chubb, Malik Reed & Co. capable of making Mahomes sweat…even just a little?
OrangeandBluesBros: Frankly, I think the Broncos have been playing better without Miller this year than with him. Scandalous comment, huh? But Von was more talking a good game than playing one the weeks before he was traded. I know he was playing injured and he is a great player, but missing Von is not as big a problem as it once was. I hope his foot/ankle/toe or whatever heals and he rides the Rams to success. However, Chubb is coming on and both Jonathan Cooper and Malik Reed have had some success. I’ll have to trust Fangio to come up with schemes with what we have to get the job done.

MHR - If the Broncos are going to have a chance on Saturday, which unit is the most important for success - offense or defense? What do we need from special teams?
OrangeandBluesBros: “Most important” is a tough term. The Broncos need all three to fire on all cylinders. I know they can, they just have to do it (hello, Nike). Special teams needs to be “special” and not just an obligatory bunch of 11 players on the field. That doesn’t make them “most important,” just “carry your own weight” important.

MHR - Describe this season in one word. Then feel free to elaborate.
OrangeandBluesBros: “Over” Every year, most of us fans come in with expectations, differing expectations to be sure, but the twists and turns, covid and injuries, additions and subtractions, and hopes and disappointments have worn most of us down. Even though there is one game left, the Broncos are not going to the playoffs. So the season is over. It’s now time to start looking toward next season and develop new expectations, while the Broncos put the nail in the coffin of this season, win or lose.

MHR - Every offseason means changes to the roster. Which players do you think NEED to remain Broncos, even if (like me) you want all of them to stay?
OrangeandBluesBros: Like MG said, we have a talented team that could go a long way next season, maybe even the SB. I’d like Lock to stay even if it’s only to give him one last chance. I expect Teddy to move on, not because I don’t like him, but because I think he will do well enough somewhere else and we need a monumental improvement at QB. We need some improvement in both lines, but it’s more fill in types, not necessarily replacement types. The backups either step up or step out. The DBs are looking good, but we don’t have the embarrassment of riches there we thought we did. Simmons and Sterns are keepers, so are Surtain and Darby. Fuller can come back on a lesser salary and play slot, not boundary. Callahan’s availability is the biggest question, is he worth holding down a position and if so, for how much? I don’t know the answer to that. Bolles, Meinerz, and Muti need to stay. Our receivers and TEs need to stay (Sutton, Patrick, Jeudy, Hamler, Fant, Albert O, and Saubert). Of course, Williams needs to stay, maybe Gordon at the right price for his age and fumble history (I like him but I remember he wanted more money than the Chargers offered him and we got him for even less than the Chargers offered, so I’m not sure what it will take to keep him). A lot of non-starters need to stay because they have filled in well. I can’t say keep everyone, but keep most.

MHR - What would you like to see happen within the Broncos organization for major changes - from ownership on down to coaches to assistants to QB? Do you “trust” in The Bowlen Trust to pick the right owner? Do you trust Paton to make good personnel changes?
OrangeandBluesBros: I’d like to see a Bowlen, like Brittany, work out a deal with the family to continue ownership of the Broncos. They would be smart to do so. The Broncos are worth in the neighborhood of $4B now, but the gambling effect is reportedly going to send that price sky high, maybe in the $16B range. So, a new owner coming in now may be just for the money and not for the team, while a new owner later will have to be serious about the team, not just the money. Yes, I think the Bowlen Trust has already worked out an arrangement with the Bowlen family and its Brittany in the forefront. They are talking to banks to work out the financing. Otherwise, the rumors about a new owner would be more robust, not just speculation with a deadline approaching fast. I have utmost admiration for Paton for what he has accomplished so far, even though I was skeptical before he was hired. He will have another great draft and veteran hires.

MHR - What is your favorite memory of a good rivalry game between the Chiefs and Broncos?
OrangeandBluesBros: I’m too old to have many memories still in my mind and I’m rushing this entry in the UFG too fast to slow down long enough to try to resurrect them. I like all the ones where we won.

MHR - Broncos have lost a lot of “alumni” this year, including Demaryius Thomas, Dan Reeves, Greg Robinson and Odell Barry. Any favorite memories of each/any?
OrangeandBluesBros: Well, I have DT’s jersey (actually I gave it to my son, who I raised a Broncos fan), so a lot of his plays, including the playoff walk off TD for DT from TT and many from Manning to DT. Greg Robinson was a great DC, up there with Wade and Vic. Dan Reeves was an awesome coach, but I remember more his battles with Elway, his drafting Elway’s “replacement” (Tommy Maddox) who was a sophomore when he was drafted and never really developed, and his consternation with Shanahan for working behind his back with Elway to put on a spectacular offensive show. It doesn’t seem fair to Reeves that that’s what I remember because he was a great coach in a run emphasized offense, but of course he was a great running back before he became a coach, so I get his preference. It took Elway a long time to appreciate that preference, until TD came along. May they all rest in peace.

My sympathy made me a Broncos fan and I’ve been a die hard fan ever since, even though I’ve moved from Colorado to California (SF area), back to Colorado, back to California (Los Angeles area), then to DC, and now to Florida. I swear the Raiders were following me around in those California moves, and I never liked them.

Broncos Country is the best fanbase in the NFL. They demand greatness, and have a ton of pride. This move could cull the herd a little, but in the end, we have followed the franchise through thick and thin. Things have not been great, but remember, just two seasons ago the Denver Broncos were Super Bowl champions.

Will you continue you trust in John Elway? Will you still show up for games? How far does your support go? This may seem like a huge middle finger to the fans, but after calming down I am on board. Give me that turd sandwich. I’m ready for my bite!

Broncos Country finally got to see De’Angelo Henderson, and DeMarcus Walker. Too bad it took so long.

With the end of the 2017 season, the Denver Broncos can finally focus on free agency and the 2018 NFL Draft. However, the last game of the season was strangely bittersweet. The sweetness came in the form of De’Angelo Henderson and DeMarcus Walker. The bitter comes from having to wait until Week 17.

As Ian St. Clair and I discussed on the MHR Radio postgame recap, Henderson and Walker both shined during the last game of the season. It leads to questions about both players. First, why didn’t Vance Joseph ever give Henderson a chance? Second, why was Walker never utilized in his natural position?

Henderson has a ton of talent. His skill set seems well suited to the NFL. He is explosive, and elusive. His touchdown catch was a perfect example of his potential. It was also an indictment of Joseph’s decision making.

While Isaiah McKenzie continued to be trotted out there to fumble punts, Henderson was passed over every week. It certainly should cause concern about what decisions Joseph might make in the future.

Looking at Walker, it has been clear all season that he was never utilized the way he should have been. Drafted in the second round as an interior defensive lineman, the Broncos tried to convert him to an edge rusher. His play against the Kansas City Chiefs showed that was a huge mistake. His 3 tackles, and 1 sack don’t do his game justice.

The Broncos lost a close one in a meaningless game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Her are my thoughts, opinions, and analysis on a game that closes a very sad chapter in the annals of Broncos History.

Blech.

The one thing I’m excited about is getting to be done with this 2017 NFL season. It hasn’t been interesting, fun, or up to par with what I expect as a fan of the Denver Broncos.

The closest thing I can equate this season to is probably that last season that Josh McDaniels had with us when he got canned and Elway came in to clean house and get this team back to winning.

We’ll have plenty of time to dig into those kinds of articles moving forward, but I’ll focus this last No Bull Review of 2017 on what we can take away from this game.

Defense

I’m not sure what to make of a game where so many starters were sitting on both sides of the ball. I thought our guys played a fairly solid game and had some pretty nice plays put on them by a talented QB in Patrick Mahomes. I’m not sure he would have had such a good game against a fully engaged Broncos Defense in the least. We’ll leave it at that.

Front 7

Brandon Marshall missed a TD saving tackle early in a play that was indicative of the kind of season he had. One can only wonder at what happened to this guy. 2 years ago he was a play making machine. Now he is a shadow of that and has looked like a guy who’s put it on cruise control ever since he got his contract extension. I see no fire in his play and a lot of times where he’s a step behind where he needs to be.

Demarcus Walker playing inside looks really good. I’m excited to see what he can do next year back at his correct size and playing at his correct position. I’m still scratching my head at why this guy was moved to OLB this year. Hopefully Bill Kollar sticks around and works with him as he’s got some really decent potential as an interior pass rusher.

I don’t have any big things to point out on Von Miller, but I loved seeing him play so much of the game after other starters sat. I’ve talked about a void in leadership and that kind of move by Miller is a step in the right direction.

Secondary

Will Parks showed some pretty terrible coverage for a big gain early on. I’m not sold on him as a serious player for the future of the Broncos. He’s looked good at times, but he’s also had poor showings just as often. He seemed a bit flat-footed in his coverage assignments in this game and it looks to me like he’s not really processing the play fast enough in order to get his technique engaged and keep in position to defend plays.

Darian Stewart made a great play as FS being in the right place to pick off the overthrow by Mahomes. He’s a natural at FS and even though I was a fan this season of moving him and letting Simmons play FS, it will be interesting to see what we do with Stewart next year.

CHJ got some throws completed on him because the young KC QB doesn’t know better...but interestingly enough the throws were largely perfect and in places that CHJ couldn’t defend. He wasn’t in the game long, but was honestly like glue on his assignments until he got to take the bench.

Offense

We got some mediocre production from the team with a young QB who looked an awful lot like the same rookie QB we’ve seen in the past 2 years. There was flashes of competency overall mixed with lots of derptitude. Pretty much it was nothing new to the Broncos of the 2017 NFL Season.

Quarterbacks

The frustrating thing to me as a fan is seeing Lynch play and noticing the potential that is there. He had a nice timing pass over the middle to DT. He also threw some very nice sideline passes to Taylor that hit for big gains and were thrown very well.

But the problem is that there’s too much dumb play going on from him as well. The bad INT at the end of the half was a pass thrown into triple / quadruple coverage. Let’s also give Lynch the award for the derpiest draw play ever which came at the start of the 2nd half and took about 3 seconds to get the ball into CJ’s hands. His 2nd INT pass had too much hesitation. The route was there, but you have to throw it on time without any pause and Lynch didn’t.

One big problem I saw with Lynch in this game was his lack of pocket awareness. He gave up a scoop-and-score fumble and took a sack that was all on him by holding the ball too long. He also took a sack he shouldn’t have with Stephenson blocking his guy very well to give him 3 seconds and then not being able to keep blocking after the defender had already crossed Lynch’s path and was easily able to cut back and make the sack.

He ended up with 2 TD passes, 2 INTs, and a QBR that a certain other so-called QB on the Broncos roster could only dream of mid-season.

Line

I’m going to stand by the offensive line and say they definitely are improved from the product we saw in 2016. I do think some changes need to happen for them to really get solidified and be able to help the offense hum again, but the play was absolutely good enough for Denver to have won this game. The run blocking worked to the tune of 4.3 ypc. The pass blocking was pretty effective.

Running Backs

Deangelo Henderson had a superb play to kick off his NFL career with a screen play he took to the house. His final numbers weren’t necessarily impressive, but the guy looks quicker than any other back the Broncos had in 2017 and I still wish we would have seen more of him this season.

Let’s all take the time to give C.J. Anderson a big Mile High Salute. He finally put a 1,000 yard season in the books and that is no small feat. I’m unsure of his future with the team, but I’m pretty proud of the effort he showed this season, especially in the back half when other players on the team were checking out.

Receivers

Love the route running by Jordan Taylor. If he could add some speed or quickness to get separation, he could be a real weapon in the NFL. Late in the 1st half his sideline catch with the defender draped all over him was very impressive. He’s got great skills in going up for the jump balls downfield. It was good to see him showcased in a game and show some good potential.

Why do we throw passes to Bennie Fowler on 3rd down? More importantly, why is this guy still employed as an NFL receiver?

Special Teams

Brandon McManus hit some field goals.

Riley Dixon punted nicely.

I practically lost my mind when I saw Isaiah McKenzie back to return kicks.

Final Thoughts

I hope the one thing the Broncos organization learns from this season is that doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is the definition of insanity. Stop it. McKenzie is a bust as a returner. Shane Ray is no DeMarcus Ware by any stretch of the imagination. T-Sizzle is a real estate agent. Bennie Fowler may be able to hack it in the CFL...maybe.

Let’s get real about NFL football now that this 5 - 11 season is in the books. That starts with being done with silly fairy tales about players you draft highly automatically being starting quality. Players are what they are no matter how much your GM might want them to be more than that. Coaches need to trust what they see in guys and start the best players and GMs need to stick to getting the best talent they can and leave the coaching to the coaches.

One thing is for certain...MHR is going to be a lot more interesting over the next few months as this team starts searching for answers and we’ll be here bringing you the same great insights, opinions, and community we always have. Take heart...we’ve seen stuff like this before and this too, shall pass Broncos Country.

Happy New Year to you all!

The Denver Broncos didn’t necessarily need a win, but Paxton Lynch played his best game of his career and Patrick Mahomes II played just a little better.

Mercifully, the Denver Broncos 2017 season has come to an end with a 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs backups. The 5-11 season was a disappointing one, but at least it is finally over for the Broncos and their fans.

On to 2018!

First Quarter

The Chiefs received the ball first and rookie Patrick Mahomes II faced his first third down to open the drive. He hit a deep pass over the middle and a few plays later Kareem Hunt ran 35-yards for the touchdown run to cap a 57-second 85-yard touchdown drive.

In true 2017 Broncos fashion, they quickly went three and out with Paxton Lynch throwing incomplete to Demaryius Thomas on third down.

After a terrible Mahomes pick, Lynch got his offense moving down the field with some big boy throws fans just haven’t seen from him in his first two seasons as a pro. However, a great pass to the endzone to Isaiah McKenzie was dropped and the drive stalled just inside the red zone.

The Broncos defense continued frustrating and confusing Mahomes through the first quarter, even forcing a 4th and 31 at one point thanks to a timely Shelby Harris sack.

Lynch at this point in the game was an impressive 11/14 for 118 yards and a touchdown in the game. Mahomes was just 5/11 for 83 yards and an interception.

With the entire starting secondary for the Broncos being benched at this point, Mahomes and the Chiefs got things rolling again late in the first half. They capped an impressive drive with a short 1-yard run for a touchdown to retake the lead 14-10.

However, with just over a minute to go, Lynch and the Broncos were not done. A quick 11-yard screen to Thomas was quickly followed with a deep pass to the sideline where Jordan Taylor made an acrobatic catch in field goal range.

Unfortunately, Lynch was going to Lynch at some point. As bad as Mahomes interception was, Lynch’s interception to end the half into quadruple coverage was one of the worst decisions of the year by any Broncos quarterbacks.

Mahomes got the offense going again with the time to throw and some wide open wide receivers out there. However, after a 10-minute, 18-play 90-yard drive the defense held firm at the one yard line with a tremendous goalline stand to force a field goal attempt to put the Chiefs up 17-10.

On the Broncos next drive, Lynch would be hit from behind and fumbled the ball. Which, of course, was picked up by the Chief and returned for the touchdown to break the game wide open 24-10.

The third quarter came to an end with another failed Broncos offensive drive resulting in a punt.

Zaire Anderson took things into his own hands at that point with a scoop and score on a fumble return for a touchdown to give the Broncos a fighting chance down 24-17 to the Chiefs.

Three plays later on fourth down and four, Lynch hit Thomas for the touchdown to tie the game up at 24.

Mahomes came back in the game and made a crazy good throw to keep the drive alive. He threw across his body with the kind of arm strength we haven’t seen since Elway was a young player in the NFL.

Happy New Year! Let’s join our hands together and say goodbye to the Denver Broncos 2017 season. May we never see ye again!

The Denver Broncos are looking to put 2017 into the history books. They are rolling with Paxton Lynch as the starter against the backups of the playoff-bound Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs will start their own first-round pick, Patrick Mahomes II, against the Broncos No Fly Zone. As they peek to the future, the Broncos are likely peeking to the past by starting Lynch.

Changes are in the winds at Dove Valley and it could start as early as later today. John Elway is unhappy with coaching and Broncos Country is unhappy with his recent NFL Drafts. The most important offseason in a half decade is about to begin, so buckle up!

Game time! The Denver Broncos take the field one last time in 2017 to face the Kansas City Chiefs. Here’s how to watch.

The 2017 Season will come to an official end for the Denver Broncos on Sunday as they face the Kansas City Chiefs at home in the final week of the season. The arduous and challenging season will likely set off with some big changes in the offseason, but first, they have one more game to play.

Game time

Kickoff is set for Sunday, December 23, 2017 at 2:25 p.m. Mile High time at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado.

Odds

With the Chiefs resting their starters and rolling with rookie Patrick Mahomes II, Vegas opened the Broncos 3.5-point favorites at home. With Mahomes being confirmed, the line has risen to 4.5-points, which I think is absurd. Paxton Lynch is not a guy any sane person should put money on in this game.

Quotable

Von Miller has no quit in him. He is looking to go out there in Week 17 and put forth maximum effort and end the season on a high note.

“I still have opportunity,” Miller said on Friday. “I have 10 sacks right now. Our defense has been playing lights out all year long. We still have an opportunity to build on that and still finish high defensively despite all of the other adversities and challenges that we’ve been through this year. That’s what keeps me going. When I pull up to the gate and my key card still works, I come in the locker room and guys still respect me, coaches still love me and I still love to play football, that’s where we’re going to keep it.”

Predictions

Prediction? Paxton Lynch will verify what we all already know. He is not long for the NFL. Vance Joseph will continue to make a strong case for his dismissal as head coach. John Elway, afraid of damaging his legacy, will likely avoid rocking the boat so soon after ... well ... rocking the boat. Mahomes goes out there and does just enough to win a pathetically low scoring affair.

Prediction: 5-11. With Salt.

The season finale for Denver can’t come soon enough, but here’s the series history before kickoff.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

It’s finally arrived.

The end of the 2017 Denver Broncos season is here. What better way to ring in the new year? After today we can put this dreadful campaign to bed and get excited about what John Elway and his minions will do fix this two-year mess.

Before that happens, we have to endure a glorified preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs (9-6), who will rest their starters in preparation for the inevitable loss in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs. For the Broncos (5-10), most hope they do what they’ve done all season long — have a great week of practice and then not show up for the game. It’s all to ensure the higher pick in the NFL Draft.

Here’s a look at the regular-season history between these two rivals. The notes are courtesy of Denver’s weekly release.

Sunday’s game in Denver marks the 115th regular-season game between the Broncos and Chiefs. Denver is 54-60-0 in those games -- 35-22 at home; 19-38 on the road. The first game was Oct. 30, 1960, at Bears Stadium. The Dallas Texans beat the Broncos 17-14.

The last game played between the Broncos and Chiefs was earlier this season when KC beat Denver 29-19 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Broncos are now on a four-game losing streak to the Chiefs heading into the season finale. In that time, Denver has three wins in the playoffs while KC has one.

The last Broncos home win over the Chiefs was Sept. 14, 2014, 24-17. This was the day Denver inducted Gene Mingo, Dan Reeves and Rick Upchurch in the Ring of Fame (my wife and I were there. It was awesome to witness). The last home loss was last season when the Broncos lost 30-27 in OT.

The last Broncos road win over the Chiefs was Sept. 17, 2015, 31-24. The forced fumble returned for a touchdown by Bradley Roby was the first indication of what a special season that would be for Denver. The last Broncos road loss came earlier this season.

The Broncos longest winning streak is eight games that took place Oct. 24, 1976-Oct. 28, 1979. The longest winning streak for the Chiefs is 11 games that took place Nov. 1, 1964-Nov. 27, 1969.

The Broncos have shutout the Chiefs once in this series, 21-0 on Sept. 23, 1984, at Mile High Stadium. The Chiefs also have shutout Denver once in this series, 16-0 on Dec. 6, 1970, at Arrowhead Stadium.

The most points the Broncos have scored in this series is 49 in a 49-29 win on Nov. 14, 2010, at Mile High. The most points for the Chiefs is 59 in a 59-7 win on Sept. 7, 1963, in KC. The largest Broncos win over the Chiefs is 35 points in a 38-3 victory on Dec. 30, 2012, at Mile High. The largest Chiefs win over Denver is 52, that 59-7 win in 1963 in Kansas City. The most combined points for the Broncos and Chiefs is 88, a 49-39 KC win on Nov. 1, 1964, in Kansas City. The fewest combined points is 10, a 7-3 Chiefs win on Jan. 1, 2012 at Mile High.

An interesting note about this series: The Chiefs franchise started 25-2 vs. the Broncos (1960-73). Since then, Denver has gone 52-34, yet it still trails in the all-time series. That's remarkable, all thanks to the first 13 years.

The Broncos and Chiefs have only met once in the playoffs, in the AFC divisional round on Jan. 4, 1998, in Kansas City. Denver won that game 14-10 to advance to the AFC title game in Pittsburgh.

The Broncos enter Sunday’s game with a 2-3 record in the AFC West. With a win, Denver ensures at least a .500 record in divisional play for the 37th time in 48 seasons overall (and 20th time in the last 22 years).

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen can pass former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis for the fifth most regular-season wins and all-time victories by an NFL owner. Mr. B currently sits at 327 regular-season wins & 348 overall victories. He needs to be in Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Broncos linebacker Von Miller needs 2.5 sacks to move into the NFL's top 50 in career sacks (he currently sits at 83.5).

Roby, with one pass defended, will become the first Broncos player since Chris Harris Jr. in 2014 with 17 passes defended in a season.

Broncos running back C.J. Anderson needs 54 yards rushing to become the first Denver running back to net 1,000 yards in a season since Knowshon Moreno (1,038) in 2013.
