There are times I feel bad for box score scouts. Last Thursday is one of them. Yes, the Jets are a dumpster fire and the organization will need to deep clean everything after they’ve finally exorcised their Gase demons. They also served as the perfect opportunity for the Broncos to disappoint after a shot week and East Coast trip following a demoralizing loss to the Bucs.

Vic Fangio and the defense made sure it didn’t happen.

Up 7-3 following the long Sam Darnold touchdown and a Nick Vannet-induced field goal, the Jets offense begin their second drive out for blood. With a crossblock across the front, the plan is to catch Harris chasing a pulling guard and hit him from the side. Harris sniffs out the waiting trap, sees Frank Gore set to take the handoff, and meets Ryan Griffin (84) while maintaining leverage in his gap.

As Gore plants, he looks past Harris to see Alexander Johnson working down the chute and cuts right. He tries to accelerate as Malik Reed separates from his block, which buys Josey Jewell the time to clean up. 2nd and 12.

Down 13-17 and facing a 2nd and five early in the third quarter, the Jets line up with a bunch set to the left. With two receivers to help stave off the backside pursuit, Chris Herndon (89) cuts back across the formation as the line blocks left. Sam Darnold and Frank Gore both know Justin Simmons is working his way down on the backside fit, so ideally the play goes off the left butt cheek of Alex Lewis (71).

Shelby Harris isn’t having it. He beats Lewis off the snap, works half man so he can maintain control of the B-gap, and works upfield. The best way to beat zone runs is with penetration. When Harris blows through the gap Gore is aiming for, the timeless back has to cut.

If not for Malik Reed and Mike Purcell, perhaps the 37-year-old rips off his 10,000,000th 3-yard gain. Instead he has to bounce right into Justin Simmons’ waiting arms. The stop sets up a 3rd and four. That pass falls incomplete. Three points, not seven.

Clinging to a two point lead with just over two minutes left in the game, Fangio pulls out all the stops on fourth down. Harris lines up alongside Bradley Chubb on Darnold’s blind side while Johnson comes on a blitz off the strong side. Harris works inside to fully isolate New York’s third string tackle Conor McDermott (69) against Chubb.

To Darnold’s credit, he keeps his eyes downfield against the rush but everyone’s covered, which buys the trio time to hem Darnold in the pocket. Chubb corrals him for a sack.

Now the Hall of Fame safety is looking for the same but more as the Broncos take on the Patriots in Week 5.

Steve Atwater joined Ryan Edwards and Benjamin Allbright for his weekly spot on Broncos Country Tonight Tuesday, and it was a grab bag of topics but included some interesting insight into the cornerback situation as Vic Fangio will decide whether to stick with De’Vante Bausby or go back to rookies Michael Ojemudia and/or Essang Bassey while A.J. Bouyé continues to heal.

As Atwater pointed out, even though Bassey was pulled, Bausby didn’t move to his spot covering the slot. Instead, Bryce Callahan moved over to cover the slot while Bausby took over as the outside corner.

“On the outside, you have to get up and jam the receiver or read the quarterback to see where the play is going,” the Hall of Fame safety noted. “In the slot, you have to know where all the other guys are - ‘Do I take the outside away or the inside away? Do I have help over the middle? Do I not have any help?’ Outside and inside corner are two totally different positions.”

That said, Atwater was pleased with Bausby’s performance there.

“De’Vante looked really nice on the outside corner, but we knew that last year,” he said, adding that he wasn’t sure what happened to make Fangio move him down the depth chart earlier in the season, “but I think they’re a better team with him on the football field right now.”

Edwards asked about Ojemudia’s growth at the position, and even though the analyst tried to argue with the former Super Bowl-winning Broncos’ safety that the rookie’s PI call was bogus, Atwater wasn’t concerned by the mistake one bit.

“Oh, it was PI and the crazy thing about it was he didn’t have to do it; he was in great position to knock the ball out of there,” Atwater said. “He’ll get there. He just panicked a little bit.”

But Atwater did have some advice for Ojemudia - “Stay on your feet when you tackle, man! You’re a big strong cornerback. You don’t have to go down low and tackle below the knees like some of the smaller guys.”

Atwater would prefer to see him drive through his tackles like Callahan, who is a smaller guy, but appears to have no fear.

“Yeah, Bryce makes some good solid tackles, man,” Atwater added.

Speaking of tackling, Edwards and Allbright asked which defensive player was most to blame for the Sam Darnold touchdown, but Atwater would not bite. He’s not about calling out his safeties.

“I’m not doing it because it happens sometimes,” Atwater said, adding that from Justin Simmons’ point of view, Darnold looked like he was going to slide so the defender has to let up to not hit him and get a penalty. “You just need to give Sam Darnold his props. He made a good run. I know they’re playmakers and they’ll make that play nine times out of 10.”

Atwater was also impressed with Brett Rypien overall against the Jets, making some good reads and getting the ball out quickly - even making a tackle for his running back to score.

“That was cool. Just shows he’s got heart,” Atwater said. “He’s doing everything he can to win, being scrappy. That’s what he has to do.”

In order to get another win, Atwater thinks it will have to start with the offensive line again. The unit played better overall against the Jets, which was arguably an easier defense than the Broncos’ three previous matchups, but Atwater is expecting still more from Dalton Risner and Lloyd Cushenberry in particular.

“I’d still like to see all those guys play all the way to the whistle to where they may not need to block their guy but they can block someone else’s,” he said. “They did better. Garett Bolles did a nice job. Cush played better. Dalton is struggling out there. I’d like to see him step up but I’m sure he will.”

Justin Melo sat down with the Broncos’ fifth overall pick to pick his brain following Thursday night.

Since John Elway returned to the Broncos in 2011 he’s only ever had two draft top five drafts picks. Von Miller went right behind Cam Newton in his first ever draft, and the Broncos’ future Hall of Famer was ecstatic when Bradley Chubb was selected fifth overall in 2018. The Broncos have long been known for their strong pass rush, and the duo combined for 26.5 sacks in their lone full season together.

It took until week four before the duo was separated in 2019. Bradley Chubb tried to play through pain and almost sealed a Broncos’ victory over Gardner Minshew and the Jacksonville Jaguars. His performance would mark the end of his second year and the beginning of a long road from a torn ACL.

The two have only had training camp this year as Von Miller’s freak injury saw him land on Injured Reserve. In his absence, it’s fallen on Chubb to pick up the slack as the Broncos’ premier edge rusher. Through the first three weeks of the season he’s shown encouraging growth as an edge setter, run defender, and coverage player. This week he abused three different tackles on the New York Jets.

Justin Melo was fortunate enough to pick Chubb’s brain following his dominant performance Thursday night and contributed his interview here on Mile High Report.

You’re the fourth player to be awarded the SNICKERS Chain this season, following in the footsteps of previous 2020 winners Josh Jacobs, Aaron Jones and Tyler Lockett. You’re in good company. As with last season, the chain is awarded to one player each week who has shown hunger for more with big plays and moments on the field. What does this award mean to you?

Chubb: It’s huge, man. The three players that won the award before me are great players. They had tremendous games. It takes a big game to win this award. I pay attention to it every week. They award the chain to somebody who went out there and played an amazing game. That happens to be me this week (laughs). It was so cool. I’ve been eating SNICKERS my entire life! (laughs). I’ve been working alongside SNICKERS ever since my rookie year. I played so hard to earn the chain this week. It was dope.

Congratulations once again. We here at Mile High Report have been watching a lot of your film and one thing that jumped out at us is how much your hand usage has improved. Your hand placement has been really good this season. Was there anything specific you did to refine that over the last year or so?

Chubb: After I had the surgery, I had to be off of my feet for a few months. I was doing whatever I could to improve my game. I was allowed to continue working on my upper body. I was working on everything I could and I definitely spent a lot of time working on my hand usage in general.

I was on crutches at the time. I was trying to get better at the small things that I was still able to work on. My hands happened to be one of those things. I’m glad to hear you guys have noticed that (laughs). I’m hoping to keep improving my hands. It’s gonna lead to more big plays.

And from the tape we’ve seen, you’ve been dropping in coverage a lot more as of late. You’ve done more things in coverage this season than you ever have. You look really comfortable doing it. Was that intentional growth or is the game simply starting to slow down for you?

Chubb: The game is definitely slowing down for me. Some of that has also been intentional growth. My rookie year, I came in as a guy that was used to rushing the passer on basically every single snap. I wasn’t used to dropping in coverage. To be honest with you, I didn’t really know what to look for. That whole rookie year was definitely an experience for me.

Kicking off my second year, I feel like the game slowed down a lot for me. I have a better grasp on the whole system. I understand what everybody around me is doing now. All of those things have made it so much easier for me to do my job. I feel like all of these things have played a big role in that. I’m getting more comfortable as I go.

That’s great. We love that. Did the coaches give you a heads up that you’d be dropping more in coverage this year?

Chubb: No, not at all. Its just worked out that way so far. I’ve happened to be lined up on the side where certain passing plays are occurring. I understand what we’re doing with our drops and what not. What you see me doing in coverage, that’s just how it’s worked out so far.

I’m more comfortable doing it, but it’s not like the coaching staff had some intention of me doing it more this year. It’s great to be flexible, though. I can handle the versatility. I embrace that. It’s a part of my game now. It’s a reflection of our defense. Sometimes I drop in coverage, sometimes I don’t. It just depends on where I’m lined up.

I thought Brett Rypien had a pretty solid debut all things considered. He’s an undrafted guy that was a fan favorite coming out of college. What did you make of his debut?

Chubb: He was huge for us. I’ve been around Brett for a little while now. He was on our practice squad last season. He’s always gone out there and done everything that’s been asked of him. He never shies away from a challenge at practice. He has such a great attitude. He’s a competitor in every sense of the word.

To see him get an opportunity to go out there and make his first career start, we were all so happy for him. He’s playing on the biggest stage now. He made a few mistakes but at the end of the day, every single person in the NFL makes mistakes.

We didn’t even have a full week of practice for him to get acclimated. He didn’t have a ton of time to prepare. All things considered, we all thought he was great. You saw some of the things he was doing out there. He made the most of his opportunity.

He certainly did just that. The season-ending injury to Von Miller has obviously changed the dynamic for this defense. Have you guys made any specific adjustments to account for his loss?

Chubb: I don’t feel like we made any adjustments defensively. That’s not the word that I would use. I think every single person in our locker room had to make an adjustment with themselves. We all had to look ourselves in the mirror and step up.

At the end of the day, Von Miller is a generational talent. Losing a guy like that is tough. We all sat down and had a discussion and Von was a part of that. Injuries are always going to play a role in football. This is very much a “next man up” business. We’ve been trying to fill that void as much as we can. We all had to step up and play better football. We have to continue improving.

How involved with the team has he been since suffering the injury?

Chubb: Von is always trying to encourage us. I talk to him before every game. I’m always trying to get a little bit of insight into what he’s seeing out there. He has a great eye for the little things. That’s part of the reason why he’s so great. He’s always giving me little pointers on how I could be an even better leader for this team.

He’s been incredibly helpful and involved. He’s continued to help us out even though he can’t be out there on the field with us.

The way Chubb can play in space makes the defense unpredictable.

If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be and why?

Chubb: I would have told myself to get in the film room a little bit earlier. Looking at my rookie year and last season, I was still getting acclimated with the NFL. I was still adjusting and getting into the swing of things.

I feel like when you watch a lot of film, everything comes easier to you. You really start to understand the game at a higher level. You just start to soak up a lot more knowledge about the game. Every aspect of the game starts to slow down for you. I didn’t fully realize that throughout my rookie season. If I did, things would have been a lot different.

I’ve really appreciated your time today, Bradley. This has been great. In closing, you’ve talked a lot about the overall growth of your game. Which part of your game do you think has grown the most throughout your time in the NFL?

Chubb: I would probably point to my mental approach first and foremost. I’m just more on top of everything nowadays. This applies to the playbook and what my teammates around me are doing. I feel like I have a great understanding of our defense as a whole.

I want to be that leader of the defense. It takes a lot of hard work to reach that point. I still have a ways to go, but I feel extremely confident in my process. My mental approach, my want to be a leader, those are the areas where I’ve seen a tremendous amount of growth.

The Broncos came out victorious against the hapless Jets. Here are my thoughts, opinions, and analysis on the Denver Broncos’ most recent game.

With the Broncos’ season in disarray with an extraordinary amount of injuries, a new offensive coordinator, an extremely young offense brimming with talent but poor on functionality, and a defense with little to no pass rush threat to speak of, the New York Jets were just what the doctor ordered for the team to get something positive together that they can build off of.

I was definitely excited to cheer them on and happy about the win, but after a couple of days to reflect, I’m honestly not staying excited.

This team still looks far from anything that looks like a winning football team. They have a huge amount of holes on both sides of the ball holding them back from being a team that I think can win on “any given Sunday.”

But there are some definite bright spots to be seen in this game and maybe some reason to think the team will put something together resembling a competent NFL team by the end of the season.

Defense

I know on paper this was a really positive day for the Denver Broncos pass rush. Sometimes, it looked better. But most of the effectiveness of the pass rush came from great coverage, not an actual pass rush that disrupted the flow of the offense.

Vic Fangio seems to have dialed in some answers in the secondary for sure. He should get credit for that with A.J. Bouye out and a stable of youth at corner especially. But there is something to be said for a game against one of the league’s worst and most dysfunctional teams where you are dialing up blitzes fairly consistently to generate pressure and the opponent’s QB still has almost 4 seconds to throw the ball on average before being hurried.

Shelby Harris was hands-down the star player for this defense in this game. He’s a disruptive force that is great against the run and pass week in and week out. I’m still just amazed that no one signed him this offseason and that he returned to the Broncos on such a team-friendly deal. If he finishes the season like he’s started in the first 4 games, the Broncos really should get a nice contract offer together for him for 4 years to keep him around.

Bradley Chubb finally had a good game. That’s very encouraging to me as until this week he hasn’t looked like the same player we saw his rookie year in any way, shape, or form. His first 1.5 sacks were all coverage and just him giving effort until the whistle. But his sack late in the game to close out a Jets drive when they were still in it was all him using power, technique, and quickness to get off the field and put his team in position to win. It is the kind of play we’re used to seeing from Von and hopefully it is something he’s able to build off of as the season wears on.

Welcome back, De’Vante Bausby! I was excited by Bausby’s play last year pre-injury and I’m just as stoked to see him hit the field and get back at it in an active role in our defense. He got tested several times by the Jets and showed his superb technique, savvy, and ability to anticipate plays. He’s joining Michael Ojemudia as a breakout player in this secondary. Both are taking turns getting picked on and showing they can win in that scenario most of the time.

While the young corners have plenty of great play to crow about, I was pretty disappointed in both Kareem Jackson and Justin Simmons at safety this game. They both whiffed on tackles or were in plays where they didn’t even try to make the play. They had no impact whatsoever in the passing game and really had me wondering what the heck happened to what looked like the best safety tandem in the NFL in the 2019 season.

Offense

Any time you score 37 points in the NFL, you had a good day on offense. I honestly don’t care that the opponent was the Jets. They were playing hard-nosed (and many times illegal) defense and our team kept picking themselves up and getting back on the attack no matter what.

This offense is still a work in progress. They got better play from their QB (mostly). The run game churned out a 100 yard rusher. The pass game provided a 100 yard receiver and a 3 TD QB.

I’m not crowning Brett Rypien anything. Not today. Probably not next week or anytime this season. But I am going to say it’s very likely THE backup quarterback for this team in the future once Lock gets back.

The best thing he has going for him is quick decision making. On his interceptions it was also his worst attribute, but there was more good than bad. He obviously knows what the play calls are, where his reads are, and just how long he has before he’s going to be in trouble from the pass rush. This alone makes him a superior choice to take the field over the likes of Jeff Driskel and may stave off Blake Bortles from seeing the field any time soon.

I’ve been most worried about his arm strength as it has been something I’ve noticed in last year’s preseason games and his short action the week before this. But he showed in this game, he knows how to set his feet, generate tork, and deliver the long ball even if his arm isn’t a howitzer the likes of John Elway or Drew Lock even.

The obvious worry is him making repeated terrible decisions on where to go with the ball. On all three of his interceptions, it seemed like he was going to one read no matter what happened and it really bit him in the ass. Hopefully that is something that Pat Shurmur can work on him with before our next game to minimize the mistakes as you normally don’t win games where your quarterback throws three INTs.

Also let’s not forget his lead block on the last TD of the game for the Broncos. No, he didn’t actually completely block the guy, but he did successfully get him off balance which allowed Gordon to stiff arm the guy and finish his 43 yard rumble.

Line

Did anyone else notice that the play on the right side of the line was superior to any of the previous 3 weeks? I did. Having Demar Dotson at RT made a difference in this game. No, he wasn’t amazing. He was at least average though and that is a vast improvement over the play we’ve seen at right tackle previous to this game.

I haven’t mentioned much about it because I love me some Dalton Risner, but what the heck has happened to our stud left guard? His play was straight up shaky at times in this game and has not been all that solid in the beginning of this season.

Lloyd Cushenberry III has had a fairly rough rookie season to date, but I have to say that I was quite impressed with his play batting a sure INT away from an opponent after a batted pass. That was some real heads-up football that helped keep us from being the team walking off the field in week 4 with a 0-4 record.

Tim Patrick looked outstanding in this game especially considering that he started the season as a depth WR and the Broncos had a 3rd stringer starting at QB. Patrick is a receiver that has great size and deceptive speed much like Courtland Sutton. He got to showcase it against The Jets.

Jerry Jeudy showed laser focus getting the TD catch...he had no business making that catch on an under thrown ball that should have been a pick. But at the end of the day great talent makes game changing plays.

DeaSean Hamilton had such a supreme opportunity in this game to make a big play and the moment was far too great for him. Rypien threw a very catchable ball that Hamilton just lost and ended up looking like a guy on the back end of the roster in training camp trying to make a play and keep a paycheck.

I can not begin to tell you how clutch Brandon McManus was in this game. This was at New York. That’s close to sea level and he nailed two field goals over 50 yards and made it look like they were extra point attempts. He’s making John Elway’s decision to extend him look better and better each day.

It was good to finally see a big play out of Dionte Spencer with an almost walk in touchdown on a punt return. It is never a good day to get tackled by a punter, but to be fair that punter made a heck of play and put Tyrie Cleveland in a spot where he just couldn’t block without getting a penalty.

Final Thoughts

As a fan, I’m very happy to have watched a game where my team was competitive and got a win.

As a long time analyst of NFL football, I’m hesitant to get my hopes up too much based off this game. The competition was pretty weak and the team still had far too many really bad plays on both sides of the ball.

Drew Lock can’t get healthy fast enough in my mind as regardless of if we win or lose, seeing him in more action tells us more about the future of this team than anything else we have to look forward to over the next few weeks of the season.

On Friday’s Broncos Country Tonight, the guys had that conversation with KOA’s Brandon Krisztal and whether it could happen for the game in New England.

What to make of Brett Rypien.

Until Drew Lock is back at quarterback for the Denver Broncos, and the team plays again, that will be the “hot” topic.

On Friday’s Broncos Country Tonight, Ryan Edwards and Benjamin Allbright had that very conversation with KOA’s Brandon Krisztal.

The question Ryan asked Brandon: Are the mistakes, namely the interceptions, correctable by the time Rypien plays again when Denver faces the New England Patriots? That’s assuming Rypien gets the start, which is what it is looking like.

“Well, two things, they’re going to have to be,” Krisztal told the guys. “Because Bill Belichick is certainly going to try to fool him with what they’re going to do in next weekend in New England. Second, yeah. The first one, I think it’s going to bother him the most in most ways because he was just trying to get rid of the ball. Then the pick-six, what I liked is that we saw him correct that mistake in game on the pass to Tim Patrick.

“And he talked about how (the New York Jets) tried to play that cover-2 trap and bait him and he saw it that time and made them pay with that strike down the left sideline. If that throw’s maybe even a little more inside, maybe Tim Patrick walks into the end zone. You always want to see someone correct their mistakes, but to be able to do it in game I thought says a lot about who Brett Rypien is.”

Six personal fouls, including two roughing the passer calls. In one game, people.

When the game clock hit 00:00 last night in Broncos’ victory over the Jets, head coach Vic Fangio sprinted across the field yelling at players to head “right to the f***ing locker room.”

Because the coach was done with the Jets’ BS defensive play, calling unnecessary timeouts in a game they had already lost - evidenced by the 37-28 scoreboard with a minute left - and even getting one more roughing-the-passer call with eight seconds left in the game.

After the game, Fangio explained his motive.

“There was just a couple of personal fouls there at the end and our sideline was getting pissed off about it, and I just wanted to avoid having any confrontation at the end of the game and having it get ugly there,” the head coach said after the game. “So, I tried to get our guys to leave quickly just to avoid anything happening there. I thought it was the prudent thing to do.”

If you didn’t know better, you just might think Jets’ defensive coordinator Gregg Williams - oh he of Bountygate fame - was telling his players to pound Brett Rypien into the dirt just to be mean.

Steve Smith, former Panthers wide receiver, certainly thought so.

The Jets committed four of their six personal fouls in the first half but committed 11 total penalties for 118 yards.

Williams’ unit now has six roughing-the-passer flags through four games. Only two other NFL teams have been called multiple times for roughing the passer — Chicago (three) and Atlanta (two) — according to ESPN stats.

Two of the personal foul calls on Thursday night led to points for the Broncos offense. The first 15-yard penalty on linebacker Tarrell Basham at the Broncos’ 42-yard line led to a Brandon McManus field goal, thinning the Jets’ lead to 7-3. The second one - called on Quinnen Williams - gave the Broncos enough life for a 48-yard touchdown from rookie wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.

For his part, Rypien made nothing of the penalties after the game and took it all in stride.

“They definitely took a couple of late shots and had that facemask call on the last penalty, so that was to our benefit,” he said, adding that it was a good introduction into “what the NFL is like” every week. “It’s a battle to get wins out here. We had to fight for everything we got. It didn’t go right at times and a lot of things went wrong. I turned the ball over and thankfully we were able to come out with a win.”

Who gets our game balls for the Denver Broncos 37-28 win over the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football?

The Denver Broncos got into the win column for the first time this season with a dramatic 37-28 win over the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football despite nearly half the teams salary cap tied up in players who didn’t play.

Despite the game being a bit sloppy at times, it turned into a bit of a back and forth shootout type game despite the Jets only putting a single offensive touchdown on the board. The story is about the Denver offense who finally began to move the chains like many thought they’d be able to do in 2020.

Let’s get our game balls handed out!

Brett Rypien

Brett Rypien was out there looking like a quarterback of the future for a while. He was accurate and poised keeping the Broncos in the lead for much of the game. After a very nice looking touchdown throw to Tim Patrick late in the third quarter, even other NFL quarterbacks were chiming in on Rypien’s play.

However, then came the early fourth quarter. Rypien threw a pick six then came right back out and threw another interception that helped the Jets take the lead. I thought for sure Jeff Driskel would be coming in at that point, but Head Coach Vic Fangio stuck with him and Rypien bounced back to re-take the lead for Denver late on a beautiful pass to Patrick for a 31-yard gain that would lead to a field goal.

He didn’t have the best stat lines completing 19 out of 31 for 242 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions, but he looked like he belonged out there and did what no other Broncos quarterback has been able to do this season - lead the team to a win. - Tim Lynch

Tim Patrick

The Broncos receiver had himself a game. Patrick finished with a game-high 113 yards on six catches and one touchdown. As Adam Malnati and I talked about the MHR Radio Podcast, what Patrick has flashed the last two weeks (on top of what Jerry Jeudy did on Thursday), you can see glimmers of a bright future for the offense and the franchise. That’s especially true when Courtland Sutton returns next season. - Ian St. Clair

Averaging nearly five yards per carry, Melvin Gordon’s 107 yards and two TDs showed Broncos Country why he was given a two-year, $16 million contract from Denver even when Phillip Lindsay was on the roster - because you can never have too many speedy running backs willing to break some tackles (or bounce off a few) to squeeze out the tough yards. Gordon did all of the above on Thursday and even sealed the win with a breakaway TD run with just two minutes to go in the game. - Laurie Lattumore-Volkmann

In a hard fought win on a rainy night close to sea level, Brandon McManus was absolute nails. He hit two 50+ yard field goals in a game that was close until the end. The Broncos needed this win in a bad way and McManus was a big part of making sure the team ended the night the right way. - Sadaraine

Jerry Jeudy

Jerry Jeudy had just two catches for 61 yards. Not a bad average, but not a huge impact on the game. However, one of those catches was his first touchdown catch in the NFL. And it wasn’t any regular ho-hum catch. LeBron James tweeted about it. It made everybody invoke the name of Randy Moss. The young rookie went over the top of Pierre Desir, snatched the ball away, and then casually backtracked into the end zone. The disrespect was unreal.
Alexander Johnson

With Denver’s defensive line decimated by injuries, we will likely see more blitzing to generate pressure. Luckily, Alexander Johnson excels in that area. Aside from his missed sack on Darnold early on, Johnson had a great day and was all over the place on defense. It’s hard to remember sometimes that Johnson still hasn’t played a full 16 games with the Broncos (believe next week will make it a full 16), because he already looks like a vet out there. In a season full on shuffling and change ups, AJ has been a reliable constant in the middle of the Broncos D. - Jeff Essary

De’Vante Bausby didn’t have the flashiest game, but he seemed to be making plays on the ball every other play in the 4th quarter when the Broncos needed him most to step up. HE finished the game with 3 solo tackles and 3 passes defended (led the team) despite only playing on 39 defensive snaps which was 51 percent. With Essang Bassey struggling, Bausby’s anticipation and veteran moxie is going to be put to good use in the coming few games. Let’s hope he can stay out of the dog house. - Joe Mahoney
