Here's some of the interesting things I picked out during the 1st half of the Broncos latest preseason game.

Protection Issues?

Naw. The biggest question surrounding both Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball all preseason has been picking up the blitz. I didn't see one pressure allowed by either in the first half, in fact lets take a look:

Ronnie Hillman

Montee Ball

there's a double A gap blitz, Montee picks up the one coming right up the middle

Good showing from both young players. If you're thinking of the play when Cortland Finnegan blew up Peyton Manning, Julius Thomas chipped him on a corner blitz going into his route. Peyton needs to get the ball out quicker, neither back messed up, if anything it was a miscommunication on the line.

Hillman a problem?

Possibly. I'm not ready to give up on him with the depth chart quite yet. I still think both he and Montee Ball will be the predominant starters with Knowshon Moreno playing some 3rd downs. Also interesting to note, when the Broncos went into their two minute offense before the end of the half, it was Knowshon Moreno who was the RB. Knowshon is still a vital part of this team.

Back to Ronnie Hillman. I've tried to pour over each of his carries to find him being careless with the ball and I just don't see it. On both the fumbles he's lost, you can chalk it up to bad luck. On the first the ball is popped out by a helmet hit, on the 2nd his forward progress had been stopped. Now I'm not saying it doesn't bother me, but I've backed off of it a little bit. Hillman is the guy who is more capable of stretching the defense from sideline to sideline. He consistently gains positive chunks off tackle and is the only back on our roster that has proven that against the ones.

if the issue with Hillman persists, he won't be carrying the ball bottom line.

Pretty similar numbers from both running backs. One thing has become apparent to me. Montee Ball struggles on the outside, Ronnie Hillman struggles on the inside. I want to say that the majority of their respective bad running plays come precisely those circumstances. Hillman has 7 runs that have gone for negative, 0, or 1 yards, while Montee has 8.

Problem is, since they are so similar and since Montee Ball has no issues protecting the ball, he might be getting that much closer to becoming RB 1A on the depth chart.

Caldwell solidly #4

Caldwell played some duel roles on Saturday. He split time with Jacob Tamme in the slot and also saw some snaps on the outside. He played well. There were two key receptions he made on the day. One was a quick slant on 3rd down with the blitz coming. Easy first down. The other was a gorgeous back shoulder throw down the field on the sideline on 3rd and 2.

I caught one instance on another play where he failed to pick up Manning's check.

You can see the off man coverage. Manning is expecting that quick WR screen to Bubba here on the bottom. Bubba instead charges up field.

Manning pulls the ball back seeing that Caldwell is not ready and instead gets it to Tamme here on the same side.

Regardless, "Bubba" is firmly entrenched as that 4th WR and can play the slot and outside. Remember that training camp practice where Wes Welker sat out and Manning targeted Bubba all day (and even cussed him out)? Tough love, the playmaking ability is there.

Clady makes a night and day difference

No offense to Chris Clark, but he's simply overmatched. It is disappointing that no one can challenge him for that swing tackle spot right now because it would be a disaster if he had to start for Clady. Remember earlier when I said Montee Ball struggles running off tackle? To be fair, most of his issues last game were because of Clark getting abused by Richard Quinn.

First issue, he lunges at Quinn and gets his head down.

When you lunge and get your head down, you give away your leverage and Quinn tosses him aside like a rag doll.

Julius Thomas Fan Club, Newest Member: Bronco Mike

Just don't screw up on your block on a FG again ok? Other than that, he has now given me three straight games of good production, not only as a pass catcher, but as a blocker. I am really impressed with how he has consistently sealed the backside or blocked down on the edge when asked to. 11 personnel with him in the game, if he continues to be a good blocker, will be damn near impossible to defend especially with Wes Welker.

With Welker out of the game yesterday, Tamme saw some time in the slot at the same time Julius was playing TE. I still think the Broncos keep 4 TE's. But as of now, Julius Thomas is #1. Peyton Manning said as much in a radio interview with KOA following the game on Saturday.

Peyton "MF" Manning

The Rams played soft. Cover 2, zone with the LB's. I don't care. Manning went 15/20 in the 1st quarter when it was all said and done. Call dink and dunk if you want, he took what the defense gave him. His arm is stronger, want to know how I can tell? He's missed receivers deep because he's overthrown them. This is something he'll have to adjust to now that he is feeling better in that right arm. Peyton is going to light it up come September 5th.

BTW, he wanted to come in during the 4th quarter and throw the ball around. In fact if you can go back and rewatch the broadcast, speed up to the 2 hour 6 minute mark. I wish I could make a gif of this. Manning is asking John Fox something. Fox clearly mouths the word "NO" and is animated in his response. Is Manning asking to go back into the game?

Von will be missed

Get off your soapbox already. Yeah you, stop the finger pointing, the judgements, all of it. Let's realize this situation for what it really is, sad. Von made so many plays in limited action during one half of play. He will be sorely missed for the first 6 games of the season.

Here he splits a double team off the edge to make the tackle in this play:

So what does our defense look like without Von?

Still not entirely sure. With Derek Wolfe also out of the game, the Broncos used Von as a DE along with the LB trio of Irving, Woodyard, and Trevathan.

On base downs it is easy, we should see Wolfe, Knighton, Vickerson, Ayers up front with the 3 LB's. If Champ is gone you will see Chris Harris on the Outside with DRC.

In the Nickel, you can see a similar configuration with Phillips taking that rush spot. Your DT's would be most likely be Sylvester Williams and Mitch Unrein.

Dime? Here's a look at our Dime defense. Duke Ihenacho, TE killer;)

On this play Mitch Unrein and Sylvester Williams are going to run a DT stunt essentially switching positions.

Mitch gets such great leverage and bull rushes his man back into Bradford's face. Great coverage on the backside. Play takes about 4 seconds.

The Beef finally fattens up

Pot Roast and Big Vick had all kinds of big man penetration on the middle of that Ram line. It was good to see. Can't remember what beat writer said Knighton would be cut way back (Klis probably), but that's not the case. Hopefully their aggressive play transfers to the season opener.

DB movers and shakers

Kayvon Webster gave DRC a breather throughout the first half. When he had an opportunity in coverage, he played well. DRC also played well in fact, I snipped this beauty from a play he made on a deep ball:

step by step...

If Champ has to sit Week 1, we won't miss a beat.

Chris Harris Jr. shut out Tavon Austin. The same Austin who almost ran a punt back for a TD. 1 catch for 12 yards is all the rook could muster.

I'll be back tomorrow to bring you my notes from the 2nd half. Hopefully by then I'll be able to make some sense of the mess that still remains in the backup offensive line spots. I'm pretty close to projecting my final 53-man roster, only a few questions remain.

If you have any questions, shoot!

When you and I see rain, we think shelter. We think umbrella. We think about how we wish it was a sunny summer day.

Peyton Manning thinks, "opportunity."

Even John Fox couldn't keep a straight face when he described what Peyton Manning was doing at the end of the fourth quarter Saturday.

"Wet ball mechanics."

With Denver's Week 3 preseason game on the line late in the fourth quarter, many people noted that Manning, having long since been benched, was wearing his glove and warming up on the sideline. Did the future Hall of Famer plan on going in? In the fourth quarter? Of a preseason game?

"No, he had no intention of going in," Fox said of Manning. Then he laughed, "He was working on his wet ball mechanics."

Rain had started drizzling late in the second half of Denver's narrowly won 27-26 game against the St. Louis Rams, and Manning apparently saw the precipitation as a chance for preparation.

The funniest part of Fox's joke is that it wasn't a joke at all. Peyton Manning really was working on his wet ball mechanics.

"It was raining there at the end," said Manning, without a trace of laughter. "We haven't had much rain in practice."

"I took some snaps with Manny," Manning continued. "That is something you don't take for granted with a new center. We are going to have some weather I'm sure throughout this year, so I was just trying to use the situation to work on something."

That, among many things, is what separates Peyton Manning from the rest of us lowly members of the human race. As Fox said, Manning will take advantage of every opportunity.

And he'll see an opportunity when we see a drizzle.

How did the Broncos do in the "dress rehearsal" preseason game? Not that great, but they came away with a W.

This just in... Ronnie Hillman needs to be benched... forever! I don't know what type of evidence he has on John Fox, but it has to be juicy in order for him to keep his starting roll after 2 straight weeks of horrendous play!

Trindon Holliday is saying "Damn dude, you need to learn how to hold onto the ball."

Welcome back Ryan Clady!!! You are missed my friend.

Our offense is playing fast.. really really fast. The Broncos had 30 offensive plays in the 1st quarter. That's ridiculous!!! I just hope it leads to more points in the regular season.

Why in the world is Fox starting Von Miller? for real, why? I'd think that he would use this time to get the week 1 starting defense gelling instead of having Miller play with the 1's

Mitch Unrein and Malik Jackson showed up to play today! Everyone's favorite darlings actually played up to their hype in this game. I've been skeptical on both of them, but tonight, I'll eat a bit of crow. I wont eat a lot because it's pre-season, but I'll eat a little (especially Malik).

I'm going to say this right here and right now... Although I love me some Montee Ball (1 TD tonight), I think Knowshon Moreno should start the season at RB with Ball rotating in with him. Hillman is horrible and Ball still has his head spinning with the playbook. Moreno gives us the most stability at that position, and he flat out earned a start based on last season alone!

That leads me to Matt Prater.... I had him #6 most important player, and he didn't disappoint tonight. While his 1st FG attempt was blocked (not his fault), his next 2 including a 54 yarder were right down the center of the uprights. This guy is a stud and will be our leading scorer. Top 10 I tell you, Top 10!!!!

Brock looked good tonight. He started off shaky, but settled down and looked good overall. He obviously still has some work to do, but hey, he has plenty of time to learn from Manning.

One thing is for certain... if you didn't play tonight, there's a better than average chance that you aren't making the team. Sorry Jeremiah Johnson, but this means you're gone. I know some guys love you, but the Broncos just aren't that into you.

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos showed they were indeed ready to take their game to another level, when it came to speed of the offense.

As promised all offseason, they put the pedal to the metal.

Manning and company ran a whopping 49 plays in the first half Saturday against the St. Louis Rams, garnering an impressive 290 yards and churning up over 19 of the 30 minutes of game time. The Rams, by comparison, only managed to pick up 110 yards of offense in just over 11 minutes of possession. Highlighted by Manning's 6-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas and a team-high six catches for 66 yards by Eric Decker, it was a dominating performance statistically by Denver's first team in Week 3 preseason action.

However, yards aren't points, and as was the case in Denver's previous preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, the speed of Denver's offense didn't help them offset their succumbing to costly mistakes.

An echo of last week's Ronnie Hillman fumble reawakened Broncos fans' frustrations, as Hillman's inability to protect the football led to an opponents' defensive return touchdown once again. This fumble, recovered by Rams rookie Alec Ogletree, didn't get returned 106 yards, but that hardly mattered on the scoreboard.

Then a Peyton Manning interception late in the half (another play made by Ogletree) left the Broncos with another big hole at halftime: 20 to 10.

It would be up to Brock Osweiler and a mix of starters and backups to make up the difference; luckily they were up to the task.

Osweiler was magnificent operating the first team offense, marching 79 yards down the field in 4:39, capped off by a Montee Ball one-yard run, to bring the Broncos within three points. After Matt Prater kicked a 54-yard field goal to tie the game, a stifling defensive effort led to a Rams punt in the fourth quarter. Undrafted rookie linebacker Lerentee McCray blocked the punt, setting up the Broncos deep in Rams territory. RB Lance Ball was able to eek the nose of the football into the end zone, and the Broncos took a late 27-20 lead.

Then disaster suck.

Osweiler and center Steve Vallos fumble an exchange with less than two minutes left in the game, giving the Rams another chance. QB Kellen Clemens was able to hit his man in the end zone, but the subsequent two-point attempt (mercifully avoiding a potential preseason overtime) failed. The Broncos held on for a 27-26 victory.

The home crowd clearly had a positive effect on Denver's efforts this week, but the mistakes proved costly again. How would you grade the Broncos in Week 3, overall?

I am a big believer in the St. Louis Rams and still think they will challenge the 49ers and Seahawks for a playoff spot in the NFC. Nothing has changed my mind since I put the Rams 14th in my power rankings back in June.

The Denver Broncos are coming off a pretty terrible game against the Seattle Seahawks and are probably looking to come out and have a strong outing tonight and regain some of the confidence they had heading into the preseason.

The Rams look to be a tough opponent and tend to play teams hard, but the game is in the Mile High City and fans will no doubt be hankering for some football. Expect some loud noise tonight. I like the Broncos from start to finish in this one.

How long will the Denver Broncos starters play tonight and who won't be able to play due to injury? We have the answers.

The Denver Broncos will kickoff Week 3 of the preseason with a home showdown against the St. Louis Rams tonight. With the regular season now under two weeks ago, Denver's starters are in line to get a lot of action.

The Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams square off tonight for Preseason 2013 Week 3.

When asked on Thursday after practice if the starters would play into the third quarter, Broncos head coach John Fox answered:

"I think the majority of them, yeah. Just get them used to coming out after a halftime break. This is kind of the second-to-the last opportunity for our guys before we start the regular season so that’s the plan at this point."

So there you have it.

Fox says a "majority" of the starters will play into the second half. There's a high chance that second-year quarterback Brock Osweiler will again get reps with the first-team offense, perhaps in the third quarter.

As far as who will be able to play tonight, here's our unofficial injury report for Denver:

Out: Stewart Bradley (wrist), Champ Bailey (foot), Derek Wolfe (back), Joel Dreessen (knee), Wes Welker (ankle).

Questionable: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (ankle).

As a precaution, the Broncos have ruled Welker out for the rest of the preseason, per NFL.com's Chris Wesseling. Meanwhile, Wolfe is making progress and hopes to be ready for the opener and Bailey is "getting closer" to returning. The target return date for Dreessen seems to be next week against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Broncos game against the Rams tonight will be nationally broadcast on CBS.

1. The Rams have had a hard time protecting Sam Bradford in the past, how will he hold up this year?

Well, it's certainly fair to assume things will be better. Jake Long was one of the best LTs in the game early in his career if not the best, so there's hope he can find his pre-injury form. If so, that locks down the most important spot on the Rams' line for quite some time. Veteran Scott Wells has had a full offseason to heal up; he too is a former Pro Bowler, so there's quality in the middle too. Rodger Saffold had been the Rams left tackle since being drafted out of Indiana in the 2010 NFL Draft, but he's moving over to the right side. It would have been beneficial for him to get more work in this preseason, but a dislocated shoulder in the opening game has put him behind the curve. Harvey Dahl is a capable veteran RG and there's solid depth on the interior with Alabama product Barrett Jones having been selected on day 3 in this year's draft. The only line battle is at LG, and it's probably still in the air between Shelley Smith and former 1st round pick Chris Williams. In all, the line certainly looks improved. I wouldn't discount the changes at WR and TE though in terms of his protection. He has more options that should be able to open up into space than his first couple of years, requiring less sustained protection.

The real key for Sam is sustained coaching and improved targets. Through his first three years in the league, he worked under two head coaches, three offensive coordinators and three QB coaches (including one season without one). So having his first season with some consistency at all three can't hurt. And the main headline for the Rams this offseason has been the improved targets: adding Jared Cook to bust the seam with second-year threats Chris Givens and emerging Brian Quick improving to add to rookie teammates (and former teammates) Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey.

2. Tavon Austin was probably the most dynamic player in college last year, has he been breaking ankles at camp?

Thankfully, no...the last thing we want from Tavon in camp is additions to the injury list. Seriously though, the speed and quickness is elite. There is a bit of a question as to how the Rams are going to use him. I think it's fair to say they've underused him to this point, and it's likely intentional. I'm fine with that, as he's someone who relies on natural abilities as opposed to say a Demaryius Thomas who needed time to hone his skills to adapt. But there is an obvious risk in waiting until the regular season before testing out a key member of your offense who's also a rookie.

3. Lance Kendricks has been a fantasy sleeper for some time now, is this the year he makes good on his potential?

Probably not. He's a quality dual-threat in the blocking and control passing game, so I think the Rams' opportunity to flash him deeper in the intermediate passing game is gone. Adding Jared Cook certainly signifies the Rams weren't looking to Kendricks to be a premier pass-only threat. The reality is, from a fantasy perspective, if you're looking at the Rams for a TE, it's Cook or nothing. Personally, as much as I love the Rams, I'm staying away from TE. Shared responsibilities and all that.

4. Who are some guys for us Bronco fans to keep an eye on after the starters hit the bench?

The D-line is easily the best overall, top to bottom unit on the team. The LB depth has been pretty impressive this preseason. And there's definitely talent at RB. The truth is, the Rams are soooo young and in the second year of restocking to fit GM Les Snead's and HC Jeff Fisher's vision for the team, there's not much established depth. I think I remember seeing somewhere the Rams have more UDFAs on this year's roster than any other team. It is, to me, the biggest vulnerability for the 2013 Rams. And knowing how many teams are forced to dip and re-dip into the depth chart throughout a 16-game regular season...it's a vulnerability that is likely to be exposed.

5. What are the chances that Cortland Finnegan starts a fight?

Somewhere between 99% and 100%. Haha, no, he's going to save it up for the regular season. He's a weird guy. Off the field, he's a wonderful person. He volunteers, he spends time with challenged and disabled youths, he works with the community...he's a model citizen. Thing is, in between kickoff and final whistle, he's in the running for the biggest asshole in the NFL. It's not hard to understand -- as a 7th round pick out of Samford (not a typo), he found that he could get into his opponents head to give him an edge. Sure, it carries a reputation with opposing fans. When he was with the Titans, I certainly didn't have strong positive feelings about him. But it works. Go back to the Rams-Redskins game last year in week 2. The Rams had a 3-point lead with the Skins driving to set up a game-tying field goal. With just under a minute and a half, the Redskins just fell short of converting a 3rd down, setting up 4th & 1 from the 29. But as the mainfield squads gave way for the special team units, WR Josh Morgan and Cortland Finnegan started going at it and Morgan threw the ball at Finnegan. The refs tossed a flag on Morgan for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the Skins missed the ensuing field goal try. I'm not aware of an advanced statistic that captures a play like that, but that's the epitome of what Finnegan does. He puts people off their game before, during and after each play. Even though the Redskins had talked about Finnegan's antagonistic style midweek, it still ruined their late-game chance to force overtime. As has been said about many a goon in many a sport, he may be an asshole. But he's our asshole.

Big thanks again to Turf Show Times for taking the time to answer these questions!
