In a game that will be played with little more than passive interest this week, Kyle and I dig deep into several key factors. It is our most major effort to get you at least a bit excited about the game that the Denver Broncos must play Sunday night (because the NFL will make them).

Hey, we tried. We've dubbed it Broncos Week or alternatively The Jake Plummer Episode (in which Plummer gets mentioned once, right off the top and then not again).

This is the first such award DT has earned in his young career.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, the NFL informed the Broncos on Wednesday.

Thomas caught seven passes for 108 yards (15.4 avg.) and a franchise record-tying three touchdowns in Denver's 28-20 win against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. His performance came almost 10 years after the last time a Bronco reeled in three touchdown catches (Shannon Sharpe vs. S.D., 11/16/03).

His three touchdowns were the most in the NFL in Week 10 and pulled him into a tie with teammates Julius Thomas and Wes Welker for the AFC lead in receiving scores (9). Together, they represent just the third trio in NFL history to each record at least nine touchdown receptions in a single season.

Thomas' accomplishment marks the third Offensive Player of the Week recognition for a Bronco this season (Peyton Manning, Weeks 1 & 3) and the 51st in team history since the award was initiated in 1984. He is the first Broncos wide receiver to receive the honor since Brandon Marshall's NFL-record 21-catch performance at Indianapolis in Week 14 of 2009.

Demaryius' performance marks the 12th time in franchise history a player has caught three touchdowns in a single game. The very first to do it was Lionel Taylor the Denver Broncos Inaugural season.

No making fun of my squiggly lines.

Test how precise your football knowledge is by playing the Precision Play of The Week for a chance to win Super Bowl tickets – brought to you by Gillette Fusion ProGlide, precision comfort, even on sensitive skin.

If you're looking for precision, look no further than the three touchdown passes Peyton Manning threw to Demaryius Thomas Sunday. Each one was a clinic on professional quarterback and wide receiver play. Each one was unique in the way it defeated the Chargers defense. Each one built upon the last.

The First Touchdown - Out route to acrobatic glory

There are two defenders between Demaryius Thomas and the end zone when Peyton Manning releases the football, but a crucial downfield block by Montee Ball and an acrobatic-as-hell move by Demaryius Thomas neutralize the Chargers defenders. Thomas is able to hit the corner of the end zone by twisting and contorting his limbs in a fashion I was tempted to recreate at home, but I don't think my medical insurance covers "insane football fan delusion."

The contortion is pictured, of course, at the top of this post.

Second Touchdown - Out-thinking your former offensive coordinator

For all the talk about how Mike McCoy would have an edge against the Broncos offense, having coordinated it over the four previous seasons, you would think he would be prepared for this play to come. The brilliant part about this out-and-in to Demaryius Thomas is that it was completely set up by the touchdown before it. The distance to goal, as well as the formation, are nearly identical. As the New York Times Fifth Down blog notes -

The second touchdown was an example of what’s called "building offense," which is when plays derive from earlier plays. It’s something the Broncos do better than any team. In this instance, the field position and receiver alignment were similar to Thomas’s first score. Thomas again ran an out-route. This time, cornerback Shareece Wright, knowing Denver’s tendencies, sat on it.

Peyton Manning, expecting that Wright would play the tendency, called a route that had Thomas make the out-cut but then immediately redirect back inside. It was an easy touchdown.

Third Touchdown - Perfect Execution is unstoppably perfect

There's an all-out blitz coming, but Manning sees it, and calls the perfect counter: a screen to DT. With Chargers defenders quickly in his face, Manning has to step back and contort his arm a bit to make sure those defenders don't bat down his pass. He does so, and it's daylight for DT.

By the time Demaryius Thomas catches Peyton Manning's pass, five Chargers defenders are completely out of the picture (not literally, but figuratively - those "out of the picture" are circled in red, in the picture, above). Two other defenders are just beyond the line of scrimmage and are likely out as well. That leaves four Chargers downfield to stop Demaryius - with five Broncos blockers, circled in blue, leading the way.

The Chargers didn't stand a chance. Touchdown Denver.

This play was set up by the Broncos' success in the passing game as a whole. The Chargers keyed up more blitzes in the second half in response to Denver's success in the air, so Manning responded with a well-timed, perfectly executed screen.

The out route set up the out-and-in. The two previous touchdowns set up the need to blitz, and the Broncos' ability to execute a screen. Demaryius Thomas' three touchdowns Sunday built upon one another like the stones of a pyramid, with this beautifully executed screen the capstone.

CJ was active yet didn't see any time. The duo of Knowshon and Montee was quite a nice compliment with both players averaging at least 4 YPC. Peyton Manning showed great awareness of the situation by calling a timeout when he was hurt. The Broncos still had three downs to burn a short clock, and it ensured he stayed in the game.

This might mark the 1st time all season that a CB has played every defensive snap. The way it looked yesterday was that the Broncos started with a lineup of Harris Jr., Jammer, Moore, and Adams in the secondary. It was going around twitter that perhaps DRC was benched to begin the game because of his high-steppin' antics on his pick 6 against Washington. Well, I guess that's one way to approach things...

Our weekly look at the top Broncos performers on both sides of the ball according to Pro Football Focus. The Broncos beat the Chargers 28-20 in Week 10.
WR Demaryius Thomas - 3.8. - Demaryius Thomas scored three touchdowns against the San Diego Chargers in myriad ways. An out route, slant route, and screen all led to DT TD's; San Diego had no answer for the versatile third-year pro.

RG Louis Vasquez - 2.9 - On a bad day by the Broncos offensive line, Louis Vasquez remained stalwart in his return to San Diego. He had a perfect day in pass protection and graded 1.6 in run blocking - top marks in both categories among all Broncos offensive linemen in Week 10.

TE Julius Thomas - 2.4 - Taking a 4-yard dart 74 yards for a touchdown set the tone early for the Broncos, but it was one of Julius' better days as a blocker as well. His 0.1 grade as a pass blocker is nothing special, but it is an improvement from his often-negative marks in that area, while his 1.1 grade as a run blocker was 2nd only to Vasquez team-wide.

Broncos Defense

Von Miller - 5.8 - Von Miller has been the Broncos' top-graded defender every week since his return in Week 7. His impact is being felt in both the run and pass game as Von proves to be virtually unblockable. In Week 10 he had five QB hurries and a sack, and helped Shaun Phillips finish off another sack in the former Chargers' homecoming.

Teammates of the Week

The Broncos defense definitely deserves credit for sacking Chargers QB Philip Rivers four times - he had only been sacked 12 times all season to that point. Vickerson and Knighton are awarded our Teammates of the Week.

Kevin Vickerson - 2.4 - Does a huge day from Big Vick help me forget his repeated personal foul penalties of late? No, but it certainly helps - especially since he remained unflagged in Week 10.

Terrance Knighton - 1.9 - After looking invisible in the early parts of the season, Jack Del Rio's free agent gamble is paying off big-time of late. Knighton had two QB hurries rushing up the middle and three stops on the day. The efforts of Vickerson and Knighton make these two our Teammates of the Week!

The MHR Staff's Week 10 game balls following Denver's 28-20 victory over San Diego.

John Fox

The Broncos reportedly gave John Fox a game ball following Sunday's win, something we were planning on doing as well. I tweeted during the game that I hoped Fox wasn't watching (remember Trindon Holliday's fourth quarter fumble?) - if he was, he truly earned this game ball, because I nearly had a heart attack myself. I can't imagine how Fox felt.

Joking aside, get well soon Coach Fox, we miss you, and Broncos Country is pulling for you. - Monty

With this victory today, owner Pat Bowlen became the the only owner in NFL history to win 300 games in his first 30 years of ownership. Under his watch, Pat Bowlen has done immense good for the community of Denver and the people of Colorado through his charity work. Not only that, but he has saw to it that the Broncos have remained contenders each and every decade since he took over in the early 80's. A Mile High Salute to Pat Bowlen! - Bronco Mike

Peyton Manning

A little transparency into the way we give out game balls: it's first come, first serve via an email thread among the staff, and there cannot be duplicates. I pick last, to give the staffers a chance to pick others. I fear a lot of us are falling under Peyton Manning hypnosis, because he hasn't been given a Game Ball in awhile. Manning had four touchdowns, no interceptions, and was utterly perfect in the play-action game. Manning deserves a game ball every single week, and I'm hoping we don't forget how special he is making these few seasons as Broncos fans. - Monty

Demaryius Thomas

Three touchdowns. The big guy is sure setting himself up for a big pay day this offseason. Have you ever seen a guy so big score on so many bubble screens? Demaryius spent all day stepping up to the plate and making nearly every catch thrown his way. I think it's now time that not only Bronco fans start calling him Optimus Prime. - Mr. East

Knowshon Moreno

I'm telling you right now, Moreno is a top 10 back in the NFL.

I'm telling you right now, Moreno is a top 10 back in the NFL. Denver is lucky to have him. 114 yards and another victory later, and Moreno has once again justified his lofty draft status and worth on this team. When we need tough inside yards, Moreno gets them for us. When we need a 1st down and Manning drops back to pass, Moreno protects him. What happens when Moreno isn't protecting him? He's catching passes and converting critical 3rd downs! The Broncos have Moreno for 1 more year after this one (at a $4 mil option). They would be foolish to not exercise that option even though they have Montee Ball waiting and learning on the sidelines. The NFL has for the most part moved away from the true single back philosophy, yet Moreno is proving time and time again that he can be that singular back. When I really look at things, I see Moreno as being a very worthy starter. Like I said, he's Top 10 in my book, and possibly knocking on the door of Top 5. Keep it up Knowshon, you deserve every kind word thrown your way! - Big Pete

Jack Del Rio

I mentioned it at the end of the second quarter, but the way that time was managed was very aggressive. From the Denver 17 yard line San Diego has the ball at the two minute warning, a three yard run by Ryan Matthews. Broncos time out, 1:49 remaining in the first half. Shotgun, Philip Rivers sacked by Derek Wolfe for negative five yards. Time out Denver,1:43 left in the half. Nick Novak with a 37-yard field goal attempt-- wide left. Ball goes to the Denver offense on their own 27 yard line with 1:38 left in the first half. Nine plays later, Peyton Manning has a seven yard touchdown to Demaryius Thomas.

We know that there is no way that John Fox takes a time out there, San Diego runs out the clock and possibly even scores a touchdown. This decision was the difference in the Broncos winning or losing the game. Del Rio's aggressiveness pays off. - Ian Henson

Overlooked in the Broncos 28-20 victory on the road against San Diego, was the fact that Pat Bowlen became the 1st owner in NFL History to win 300 games within his first 30 years of ownership. If fact Mr. Bowlen accomplished the feat in 29 seasons and 9 games.

It is astounding to think that Mr. Bowlen has had this team competitive and in the playoffs what will become 16 times in 30 seasons. Here are some more thoughts surrounding this capstone achievement via DenverBroncos.com:

In the last 30 years, the team ranks second in regular-season wins and Super Bowl appearances in addition to finishing with the fewest losing seasons among non-expansion teams during that span.

"Pat was a guy that really turned everything around and made winning the tradition with the Broncos," Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said at an offseason banquet honoring Bowlen for his philanthropic leadership throughout the state of Colorado.

As Bowlen explained it, when former Broncos Owner Edgar Kaiser decided he wanted to sell the team in 1984, he was "first in line."

He was introduced as the majority owner of the Denver Broncos on March 23, 1984, and he and the Bowlen family acquired 100 percent ownership of the Broncos in July 1985.

"When I look back, I can honestly say that the fans really bought into that team," Bowlen said this offseason. "It wasn't me. They bought into that team."

That relationship between the fans and the franchise has never been lost on Bowlen.

He said that the Broncos franchise is "not just the players and it's not just Pat Bowlen, it's the people who live here in town."

The connection on the fans' side seems to stem from the fact that Bowlen's main focus every single year is on hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of it.

"He puts all his attention to doing the right thing by the fans, this community and putting the best football team he can on the field each year," Broncos President Joe Ellis said in May. "I think the fans appreciate the effort that he puts forth to put the best possible team he can out there and try to win the Super Bowl."
