With DRC missing extensive time in the Broncos secondary Kayvon Webster and Quentin Jammer saw extensive time on the outside. It is pretty amazing that those two weren't victimized all that often given that they are now #4 and #5 on the CB depth chart.

Same thing with Sylvester Williams who saw extensive time with the loss of Kevin Vickerson.

On the surface it is astonishing that both Malik Jackson and Robert Ayers played so little, but in the case of Malik at least, I'm 100% certain the Broncos went with their nickel "bigs" look with the two large DT's and Phillips/Miller as DE's for most of the game with the Patriots extended use of 11 personnel. In the case of Robert Ayers he's pretty much getting role player snaps at this point.

Hopefully this week at least Champ will get to play.

Can you name the number of injuries the Broncos have had to their defensive front at this point? I sure can't. This one hurts because the big man along with Terrance Knighton has helped the Broncos front 7 become one of the stingiest units against the run.

As far as who would replace him, look for Sylvester Williams to gain an increased role.

Next man up--we still have reserves???

Looking at the positives and negatives from Denver's 31-34 loss to the New England Patriots Sunday night.

Studs

Knowshon Moreno. On a night so cold that every running back, regardless of the team, was fumbling, Moreno stepped up huge. Yes, the 224 yards was a ridiculous career high for Moreno. What was even more insane is that he shouldered a 37 carry load, and averaged over 6 yards a carry. The game could have not ended more tragically, but at least Denver fans know that Moreno is ready for the cold. Get healthy Knowshon, fast. - Mr. East

It wasn't the great play of Tom Brady or Peyton Manning that decided the game - it was a fluke fumble at the worst time.

DRC. Do you want to know how studly DRC was? It can be summed up in 1 sentence: 24-0 with DRC, 31-34 without him! Tom Brady couldn't do squat with DRC in the game. He couldn't pass, he couldn't take his time to find an open receiver, and he couldn't score points in the 1st half... Then a Hail Mary that had no chance happened. While some can point out that DRC didn't need to try to intercept it, I counter that with "that's what CB's do!" Going for the pick is so ingrained in their minds that they try for it even when getting an INT doesn't matter. Then again, maybe he takes that pick to the house and it's 31-0 at the half? My point is that when DRC was in the game, the Patriots looked pathetic. When DRC sat out the entire 2nd half, the Patriots looked like the 16-0 Patriots. Without DRC, Tom Brady picked us apart. He passed deep, he passed short, hell, he probably could have lofted up a pass to himself if he wanted to. There was no stout coverage that afforded our front 7 the opportunities they had in the 1st half to sack or cause a fumble. All Brady had to do was say "Hut, ok, where is #36? Oh, there he is... TOUCHDOWN!!!!"

Even though Knowshon went all beast mode and channeled his inner Adrian Peterson, and Von Miller and Big Vick, and Pot Roast all had amazing games, in the end, their effectiveness hinged on our pass coverage, and without DRC, there were simply too many holes in our coverage. It got so bad that Del Rio decided to go with a weak ass zone coverage (which our secondary is HORRIBLE at), and it cost us. Once we got back into man, Webster just couldn't keep up, and our other CBs like Jammer, Harris, et al, had to be too aggressive and try to cover up too many mistakes to be effective. Mark my words, if we have DRC the whole game, we win by a minimum of 24 points. Get well DRC, our defense hinges on you being the stud that you are! Pay the man, he deserves it!!! - Big Pete

Von Miller. Miller had six solo tackles, two assists on a tackle, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He took his fumble recovery on a 60-yard dash that ended in the Patriots end zone. His forced fumble came on a sack, forcing the Patriots' second turnover and leading to Denver's second touchdown. He had several plays where his speed off the corner forced New England running backs into the center of the field and led to only short gains. -Brian Shrout

Louis Vasquez. The big guard up front opened up many holes and downright dominated in run blocking and pass blocking. The Denver Broncos as a team put up 280 yards from three different rushers including Knowshon Moreno who rushed 37 times for 224 yards (6.1 yards per carry). It all started up front and Louis was the biggest reason why. - Bronco Mike

Duds

Demaryius Thomas. If it wasn't passes slamming into his finger tips that he was capable of catching, it was passes that were catchable that he was either out of position for or not willing to go after. The Broncos receivers as a whole were not fighting to get open and even taking the immense talent that Aqib Talib has into account, this match-up should have been an easy win for Thomas. Demaryius will be compared to Dez Bryant throughout his entire career and that's fair, Bryant was available when Josh McDaniels took Thomas over Bryant in the first round. However, whether it was fighting for a pass interference call instead of the ball or simply not being hard nosed enough to snatch a pass out of the air on a desperate Peyton Manning throw, it becomes obvious that Thomas lacks the killer instinct of Bryant. Yes, Bryant appears to suffer from histrionic induced rage occasionally, but maybe that is just a sign of a good receiver. Thomas got overtaken by a good (not great) cornerback in Talib. For now Thomas doesn't appear to be a guy like Bryant or Brandon Marshall that you can depend on to feed the ball and carry a team on his back in a time of absolute need. - Ian Henson

Peyton Manning. It begins and ends with him. There was absolutely no rhythm in the offensive passing game. The Broncos offense had three shots in overtime to march for a game winning score and failed to do so. While the narrative that Peyton Manning plays poorly in cold weather is lazy group think at best, the team tends to take on the mentality of their leader. The fire simply wasn't there, and one has to wonder if Peyton's introverted leadership is keeping this team from closing out big games on a consistent basis. - Bronco Mike

Wes Welker. Not only did he drop a few passes, but his punt returning gaffe at the end of overtime led to Tony Carter getting hit with a live ball and NE recovering deep in Denver's territory. After a couple of field position kneels, the Patriots kicked the game winning chip shot and completed a historic comeback victory. Welker has history of drops in big games. Last night was no different. Had he held on to a third down pass before this series of events, the Broncos could have attempted a game winning 50- yard kick. Instead he drops it and the Broncos are stuck in no man's land, too long to convert on 4th down and too long to try and kick a FG. - Bronco Mike

Montee Ball and CJ Anderson. The Broncos saw last night what happens when Knowshon Moreno needs to be spelled. Unfortunately, neither Ball, Anderson or Hillman (inactive) have been able to give the Broncos the change of pace they need when Moreno leaves the field. While it is understandable for young players to have a learning curve while adapting to a Peyton Manning led offense -- it is simply inexcusable to turnover the ball and stall drives on a consistent basis week in and week out. If the Broncos want to go anywhere in the playoffs, they need Moreno to be healthy, because the poor and untimely play of the other backs in our stable will not get the job done. - Christopher Hart

Eric Decker. A lot can be said about him catching exactly 1 pass all night. A lot can be said about him being invisible and not playing to make a catch, but instead, playing to get a flag. A lot can be said about him being 6'3" but playing smaller than Trindon Holiday. But last night, the reason why he is a dud in my book is because in Overtime on our first possession, Peyton Manning hits Tamme on 3rd down for what appears to be a few inches short in "no man's land"... what would likely happen? Well, it's a no brainer, the Broncos would have 100% gone for it on 4th down, especially with how Knowshon was playing (pre-injury). Instead of 4th and inches, there is a pass interference call on Decker for blatantly setting a pick on the defense. What should have been a gimme 1st down deep in enemy territory quickly turns into a punt and life breathed back into a New England team that knew we were going to score and put the game away! For a guy playing for a contract, Decker sure isn't making it justifiable for the Broncos to be the team overpaying for his services. - Big Pete

The Denver Broncos suffered a slew of injuries in the frigid conditions of Gilette Stadium Sunday night, with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Knowshon Moreno headlining the injury list.

Knowshon Moreno

In 2013, if there is a game when Peyton Manning falters, Knowshon Moreno usually ascends.

That was certainly the case Sunday night, as the Denver Broncos running back rushed for a career-high 227 yards on 37 carries in Denver's 31-34 overtime loss to the Patriots, It makes the news of his injury all the more damning - Moreno, who hobbled off and on the field frequently late in the loss, was seen in crutches in the locker room following the game.

Moreno was seen in a walking boot after the game, according to reports.

Moreno suffered an ankle injury in overtime, according to The Denver Post. ESPN reports that he is expected to undergo an MRI.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

The Broncos' defense changed in the second half, and the halftime exit of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is one clear reason why. Denver's starting cornerback suffered a freak shoulder injury on the last play of the second half when trying to come up with a Tom Brady Hail Mary. DRC would not return.

Kevin Vickerson

Starting defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson suffered a right hip injury in the second half and did not return. He'll also be undergoing an MRI - wondering if these three Broncos will be hanging out in the same waiting room before their tests?

Omar Bolden

Broncos special teamer and defensive back Omar Bolden suffered a concussion, according to Jack Del Rio after the game. He'll follow NFL protocol requiring him to be cleared to practice and play by an independent neurologist before he'll return to the field.

All the build up was about two players. The entire game was about so much more.

Monster games wasted

Von Miller made so many big plays today. So many pressures, a couple of sacks, a strip of Tom Brady, a fumble return for a TD. This is the 4th time Miller has played the Patriots and he has singlehandedly disrupted that offense.

Knowshon Moreno. Some folks during the week were wondering why he didn't have a big game at KC, I said was because he is limited as a runner and when the blocking isn't there he isn't a special enough player to get it done. We're both wrong. At least on this night Knowshon was a special player and was pretty much the entirely the Broncos offense tonight.

Broncos force three first quarter turnovers and turn them into a 24-0 halftime lead. 31-31 OT game is what it got them.

Can't play in the cold?

You can't have things both ways. We ran the ball down the Patriots throats in the 1st half of the game. Manning is a rhythm QB. What do you expect? You run the ball and do it effectively and then expect the passing game to pick things up cold? Not gonna happen. On another note, I thought it was a pretty big tactical error that the Broncos didn't use more play-action in the 1st half.

Timeout near the end of the half

You can't have things both ways. You want your team to be aggressive yet moan and complain when they are and something shitty happens. This is confirmation bias at its worst folks. The absolute right call was to make New England punt into the wind from their end zone. With two timeouts no reason to think you couldn't get at least another FG. What happens after makes you question a good decision when you shouldn't.

We need to think about Trindon Holliday

I think week 2 against the Giants is the last time I remember a punt return for a TD. Since then he's muffed so many kicks that we have a guy like Wes Welker returning them at the end of the game. Teams have successfully neutralized his advantage. Coffin corner, lots of hangtime. He is no longer a big play waiting to happen, he is a big fumble waiting to happen. When a guy can't be counted on, what is his use on the roster?

Can't play in the cold?

Overtime the game changes. Especially when you have the first possession. While I didn't mind the approach in the first half, and soured on it until Peyton led a TD drive to tie the game at 31, we have almost three full overtime quarters now of downright conservative play.

If you're afraid of letting Peyton Manning throw it in cold weather, then cut him right now. Bench him. No reason to have him on the field. With the way the Broncos ran the ball tonight, there is no reason why this offense couldn't have rang up 40 or 50 points. Nevermind there is---run run pass. You can only convert that 3rd down so many times, you can only grind it out so many times. Big plays turn the tides, when you relegate your passing offense to one down a series, you deserve to lose to an aggressive team.

Taking the ball out of the hands of your most dynamic player is and will always be a mistake.

There's so much to be thought about here with Adam Gase and Jack Del Rio, even John Fox when he comes back. I am not confident there is philosophy that guides them. And if there is one, it is defined by the inability to adapt.

Can we get a backup that can hold onto the ball?

It was so beautiful to watch that 1-2 punch...then BOOM. Fumble. We were moving the ball well out of halftime and then one play turned the tides of the game. I guess this means next week we will see a rotation of Knowshon Moreno (if he's not too beat up) and CJ Anderson.

Our big receivers play small in big games

These guys have got to turn up the physicality. Teams are going to jam, hold, shove, and be physical with them. They have to learn how to do it back. Right now we have a lot of big frames being wasted by lack of aggressiveness.

Broncos still in control of destiny

Remember weeks going back when we took a look at this four game stretch? What did I say then. Take care of the division and the #1 seed is ours. Broncos have done just that. In hindsight a 3-point loss to NE on the road is no big deal. Take care business next week and the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Denver.

Final Thoughts

Once we got ahead with that big lead it felt as if we played not to lose. Playing not to lose against a team desperate to win is always a recipe for disaster.

We will see this team again. Next time around it will be in our house, most likely in the AFCCG. Until then, good game Pats fans, you deserve the win.

You know as well as anyone the postseason is a different beast.

Can't wait!

GO BRONCOS!!!

Last fumble loses. Disappointingly for the Broncos, that was Tony Carter off a botched punt play by Wes Welker.

It was the Tale of Two Halves, and the Tale of Two Quarterbacks. In terms of drama and high stakes, this 14th match between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady did not disappoint. In terms of out the final outcome for Denver Broncos, it did. Bitterly.

A game full of fumbles ended with one with three minutes left in overtime - Tony Carter touched the ball on a botched waved punt by Wes Welker, creating the last fumble, and the New England Patriots escaped with a win against the Denver Broncos.

Peyton Manning didn't even pass for 150 yards in regulation, but Knowshon Moreno rushed for over 200.

First Half

The Denver Broncos raced to a 17-0 lead behind three first quarter fumble recoveries- the most allowed in the first quarter in Bill Belichick's coaching career.

The first was forced by Wesley Woodyard and recovered by Von Miller. Miller took it back 60 yards for the touchdown to open up scoring early in Foxboro (nice tackle attempt, Tom Brady). The next was forced by Miller, recovered by Terrance Knighton, who proved less fleet of foot than the All Pro Miller but still brought the ball back deep into New England territory. Knowshon Moreno finished off the drive to give the Broncos a stampede-quick 14-0 lead.

Later in the first, Danny Trevathan recovered a LeGarette Blount fumble that set up the Broncos to extend their lead 17-0 behind a Matt Prater field goal. The Broncos would execute an 80-yard drive in the second quarter to go up big in the first half, Broncos 24, Patriots 0.

Second Half

The wheels came off for the Broncos in the third quarter - it was all New England, as Tom Brady and company roared back with 21 unanswered points. In what felt like an instant - a hearbreaking, terrible instant that was really 25 minutes of football - the Patriots wiped away Denver's 24-point lead and took a 31-24 Patriots lead. Brady threw two touchdowns to Julian Edelmen and another to Rob Gronkowski as the pass rush that was so fiercely getting after Tom Brady in the first half all but relented in the second.

Then in the fourth... Finally, finally, FINALLY the Denver Broncos put together some offense, on a drive that featured some beautiful Manning throws (he hadn't even thrown for 100 yards to that point). It was Demaryius Thomas in the end zone, a clutch 11-yard pass from Manning that capped off a clutch 10-play, 80-yard drive to tie the game with three minutes left. Broncos 31, Patriots 31.

After failed two minute drives on both sides, the teams headed to overtime.

Overtime

Bill Belichick elected the wind at his back, which turned out to a be a fortuitous decision in the end.

The Broncos received the first kick in overtime and ultimately stalled after another fumble - this one by running back C.J. Anderson, who was able to recover it himself. But in a game where every play mattered, the lost down forced the Broncos to punt.

Denver's defense was able to step up and force the same against Tom Brady, and the clock kept winding down. The Broncos' next drive would turn out to be game-changing, as the Patriots stopped the Broncos at their 37-yard line. With the brutal 20 mile per hour wind blowing into their faces, the potential 54-yard field goal never would have been successful from Matt Prater. The Broncos were forced to punt, but it bears noting - had Belichick elected the ball instead of the wind, Prater would have had that wind at his back, and makeable field goal in front of him.

Disaster struck after the Broncos forced another Patriots punt. Wes Welker, who filled in for the fumble-happy Trindon Holliday on punt returns, was too late to wave off the ball, and it bumped into a full-speed Tony Carter running across the field. The second a Bronco touched the ball, it became a fumble, and Patriots recovered at their own 10-yard line to setup a game-winning field goal.
