A few days removed from a very emotional departure of Champ Bailey, one of the greatest Broncos of all time, we have to revisit the words of John Elway himself.

Shortly after the embarrassing loss to Seattle in Super Bowl 48, Elway had this to say about Champ Bailey:

"We're still in the process of talking about that and seeing what we're going to do there," Elway said. "I'm going to sit down with Champ, first of all, and find out what he wants to do, and go from there."

Yet after this past week when Champ was cut, word leaked out that there in fact had been no face to face meeting between Elway and Champ Bailey to discuss the corner's possible future in Denver.

Bailey said the Broncos did not offer him a pay cut. He was set to earn a $1 million bonus if he was on the roster March 15.

Bailey met with executive vice president John Elway and coach John Fox to be informed of his pending release, which became official Thursday.

With all you know about the situation, it stinks all around.

Fact: Champ wasn't worth 10 million per season

Fact: The right move was to cut Champ and save the money

Fact: Elway should have spoken to Champ before hand even if he knew which way the Broncos would be going

Fact: Elway looks (at the very least) to be lacking of respect of an all time great, (and at the worst) a flat out liar.

With free agency looming, one of the greatest things the Broncos always had going for them was John Elway, and lately the fact that this team is a perennial Super Bowl Contender. I tell you that after losing the super bowl in embarrassing fashion, no one wants to be part of that. I don't even want to be a part of it. Couple that with how a visiting FA sees how a GOAT is treated by the front office (certainly not befitting his dedication, production, and loyalty to the team) and you have no more edge in FA.

It's all about the green baby. I love when the team can get favorable deals because it is good for the team. 2014 or 2015 are not going to be them years. If I were John Elway and the FO I'd be very careful in following through with my words in the future because this is not the first time that red flags have popped up in regards to what has been said in different negotiations or situations.

For someone whom it took almost his entire career to taste the brass ring. For someone who was given as many chances, opportunities, and seasons as Elway, shame on him for not being able to muster at least a shred of loyalty when dealing with Champ. You didn't have to keep him on the team, but you should have treated this situation a bit differently. Champ is not just another Tim Tebow. Maybe he didn't have what it took to compete in your vision of the roster, but you should have honored his past more reverently. These are your words when you resigned him in 2011, did you forget what his contributions have meant in the face of a team-wide embarrassment?

"The commitment and loyalty that Champ has shown to the Broncos, the city of Denver and this region is exemplary,"

We all know you are loyal to the Denver Broncos Mr. Elway. We know you're doing your best. But as you should know by now, that also means doing your best when it comes to allowing a person their dignity at the end of long partnership. Imagine if Pat Bowlen had treated you similarly after losing to Jacksonville in 96?

I'm not 100% sure if this situation will ward off potential free agent names. I know it would give me pause. What I'm saying is that the illusion of a discount for a Super Bowl run is no longer valid. Super Bowl 48 killed that. The illusion of playing for honor is also gone, John Elway cutting Champ the way he did certainly pokes holes in that theory.

In the end it's all about the green. Glad we have some fat stacks, that is all our name is worth at the moment.

I rank each of Champ Bailey's 10 seasons with the Broncos from 2004 through 2013, using a formula of my creation considering individual and team achievements each year.

The formula I used was pretty simple. I considered games played that year, tackles, passes defensed, interceptions, the team's total wins, and playoff wins (counting a playoff bye as a win), each with various multipliers. I combined these to get what I call a Champ Value Score. Here is how 2004 through 2013 rank for Champ Bailey.

10. 2008

Games Played: 9. Tackles: 44. PDef: 3. Int: 1.
Broncos Record: 8-8. Result: Missed playoffs
Champ Value Score: 35

Bailey missed over half of 2008 with groin injuries, and did nothing to help the Broncos down the stretch. The Broncos were 8-5 that season and needed one win the clinch the division; instead, they lost three straight, and Mike Shanahan was fired. This was Bailey's worst season as a Bronco.

9. 2013

Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images

Games Played: 5. Tackles: 14. PDef: 3. Int: 0.
Broncos Record: 13-3. Result: Super Bowl loss
Champ Value Score: 35

The 2013 season was saved from being Bailey's worst because Champ contributed in the playoffs. Outside of those contributions, though, there isn't much positive to talk about. His foot injury kept him sidelined nearly the entire season, and, at 35, this was the first year where it was clear he had lost a step. It was also the only year as a Bronco (or in the NFL) where Champ did not earn an interception. Still, he helped the Broncos win an AFC Championship Game; in fact, he actually played very well in it. The Super Bowl was disappointing for everyone, but it's even more disappointing knowing this was Denver's last chance to win one for Champ.

8. 2010

Games Played: 15. Tackles: 45. PDef: 13. Int: 2.
Broncos Record: 4-12. Result: Missed playoffs
Champ Value Score: 50

The Broncos were really, really terrible in 2010, but it wasn't exactly Champ Bailey's fault. In fact, Pro Football Focus grades it to be Champ's best year as a Bronco with a +20.0 grade (note that PFF did not grade before 2007). Still, a 4-12 record drops this season down near the bottom of Champ's Broncos legacy, and that sounds about right to me.

7. 2011

Games Played: 13. Tackles: 39. PDef: 10. Int: 2.
Broncos Record: 8-8. Result: Divisional Round loss
Champ Value Score: 53

The Broncos returned to the playoffs in 2011 thanks to Tebowmania and a lot of luck (wait, aren't those the same thing?), and Champ played his part, outside of a few missed games early in the year. This was the year the Broncos gave him his big contract extension; he would only end up playing three out of those four contract years. He registered double-digit passes defensed for the third straight season.

6. 2009

Games Played: 16. Tackles: 74. PDef: 15. Int: 3.
Broncos Record: 8-8. Result: Missed playoffs
Champ Value Score: 69

The Josh McDaniels era began with an amazing 6-0 start in 2009 only to collapse 2-8 down the stretch, but Bailey played through all of it, tying his Broncos career-high in passes defensed. It was one of four Broncos seasons where Bailey didn't miss a game.

5. 2007

Games Played: 15. Tackles: 84. PDef: 14. Int: 3.
Broncos Record: 7-9. Result: Missed playoffs
Champ Value Score: 69

A year after nearly winning Defensive MVP, Champ's statistics fell off a bit, as did the Broncos, who missed the playoffs for the second straight year. Champ didn't push for double-digit interceptions in 2007, but his 14 passes defensed showed he was still a cornerback in his prime, if perhaps less able to turn a good play into a game-changing interception.

4. 2012

Photo Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Games Played: 16. Tackles: 66. PDef: 9. Int: 2.
Broncos Record: 13-3. Result: Divisional loss
Champ Value Score: 69

Denver's first year with Peyton Manning saw Champ Bailey continue to play a starting role for the Broncos, although Chris Harris Jr. was emerging as a more-than-solid #2 who would also line up against the team's primary receiver at times. Bailey struggled in the playoffs - some might say he was even exposed. Either way, it was the beginning of the end for Champ.

Still, before that game, Bailey still had it in 2012, which makes one wonder if it was the injury more than age that saw him slow down in 2013. He played every game for the Broncos and was a critical piece to Denver's #1 defense. Maybe another team will find that a healthy Bailey is still a pretty good one.

3. 2004

Games Played: 16. Tackles: 81. PDef: 9. Int: 3.
Broncos Record: 10-6. Result: Wild Card loss
Champ Value Score: 71

Bailey's first year as a Bronco was intriguing and promising. The Broncos were one-and-done in the playoffs again - he didn't help there - and when compared to Clinton Portis' 1,500 all-purpose yards in 2004, one could argue it wasn't clear who would get the better of Denver's blockbuster trade with Washington in each player's first year with their new teams. But Bailey was just about to hit his prime back then, 2004 was a tease of things to come.

2. 2006

Games Played: 16. Tackles: 85. PDef: 11. Int: 10.
Broncos Record: 9-7. Result: Missed playoffs
Champ Value Score: 91

Individually, this was Champ Bailey's most statistically impressive season. Bailey nearly won Defensive MVP back in 2006, leading the league with 10 interceptions and playing in all 16 games. The Broncos defense started out the 2006 season in dominant fashion, not allowing a touchdown through the season's first 11 quarters, a feat that hadn't been matched since 1942. Bailey had several end zone interceptions in consecutive games in 2006 as part of Denver's "bend but don't break" defense led by Bailey and safety John Lynch. Still, it wasn't good enough down the stretch, and the Broncos just-missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record, knocking this down a peg from what I consider Bailey's best Broncos season...

1. 2005

Games Played: 14. Tackles: 64. PDef: 15. Int: 8.
Broncos Record: 13-3. Result: AFC Championship loss
Champ Value Score: 93

Champ Bailey's greatest Broncos season just so happened to coincide with Bailey's greatest play, a 99-yard interception return against Tom Brady in the <strike>AFC Championship Game</strike> Divisional Round. This season held the Broncos' first playoff win since the 1998 season. It gave Tom Brady, who had been undefeated in the playoffs and a three-time Super Bowl champion, his first postseason loss. It ended in heartbreaking fashion against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Denver, but Bailey played remarkably well in 2005. He wasn't nearly the league's Defensive MVP as he was in 2006, but the team accomplishments in 2005 outweigh his individual achievements in '06, to me. This was Champ Bailey in his prime.

Best of luck in your seasons ahead, Champ, wherever they may be.

Good players are in it for the competition...and Hall-of-Famers are in it for the championships.

But they still want to get paid.

Football is a business.

At the end of the day - despite the win-loss records, the comeback victories, the OT wins, and all Chris Berman's "that's why they play the game" rhetoric - it's professional football and it's about money.

Even to the players.

Make no mistake, good players are in it for the competition, the drama, the fun ... and Hall-of-Famers are in it for the love of working harder and ultimately chasing championships.

But they still want to get paid.

Players, coaches, owners still know it's a job, and it's business, and as Champ Bailey so eloquently put it after being released, that "sucks."

Fans are the only party involved with no real monetary return on investment in this professional sport (excluding Fantasy Football, of course).

Releasing Champ Bailey after 10 years as a Denver Bronco - eight of which he was arguably among the best cornerbacks in the game - is purely a business decision.

But Bailey choosing not to retire is a business decision too.

He's 35. He has 34 interceptions while on the Broncos roster. His end-zone interception and 100-yard run against the New England Patriots in the 2005-06 divisional playoffs will arguably go down as one of his greatest plays - and it would make an NFL highlight reel any day of the week.

But he's 35. And he spent 11 games on the bench this past season. And the Seahawks walked (ran) all over him in the Super Bowl.

It's not that Bailey couldn't still play. But there's no doubt - even from him - that he's not at the top of his game anymore. The foot injury is still there and recovery doesn't get any easier with each year. That's an expensive bench warmer.

If this game weren't a business, Elway and Co. wouldn't be concerned about Bailey's $10 million paycheck and its impact on younger acquisitions.

If this game weren't a business, Bailey would retire, go out a hero, and finish his career as a Denver Bronco.

If this game weren't a business, fans could rally to keep Champ on the roster because he's a leader, a teacher, a great teammate and a fan favorite.

But it is a business. And it still sucks.

For all of us.

The Broncos made the move official Thursday, releasing 12-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey.

News broke of the Broncos' intent to release Champ Bailey yesterday, but the move hadn't been official until now. The Broncos announced the release of Bailey, who spent 10 years with the Broncos, moments ago.

Below is Denver's press release. Best of luck in free agency Champ!

BRONCOS RELEASE 12-TIME PRO BOWL CB CHAMP BAILEY

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Cornerback Champ Bailey, a 12-time Pro Bowler and seven-time captain who became one of the most accomplished players in Denver Broncos history during his 10 years with the team, was released by the club on Thursday.

"This was a difficult decision for our team with everything that Champ Bailey has meant to the Denver Broncos and this community over the last 10 years," Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elwaysaid. "Without question, he's among the best cornerbacks to ever play the game and one of the finest players in the history of the Broncos. You couldn't ask for more in a player than what Champ brought to this team. His combination of elite talent, class, leadership and competitiveness made him one of the all-time greats.

"On behalf of everyone with the Broncos, I wish Champ all the best and thank him for everything he did for this franchise. Champ will always be a Bronco. We look forward to his Ring of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame election in the years ahead."

Bailey, a 15-year NFL veteran and member of the 2000s NFL All-Decade Team, spent 10 seasons (2004-13) in Denver, where he became one of the most decorated players in team annals. His 12 career Pro Bowl selections trail only Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White (13) among defensive players in NFL history and tie for the sixth most overall.

"I consider it a privilege to have coached Champ these last three years," Broncos Head Coach John Fox said. "I thank him and truly appreciate everything he did for our team. There's no doubt he played an integral role in establishing a culture of winning here.

"Aside from his natural ability, Champ set a great example with his hard work and relentless commitment to mastering his craft."

In 215 career regular-season games (212 starts), Bailey has totaled 983 tackles (837 solo), 52 interceptions (464 yds.), 235 passes defensed, three sacks (26 yds.), nine forced fumble and five fumble recoveries. His 52 interceptions represent the most among active cornerbacks, and his 204 passes defensed lead all active NFL players.

He has started 10-of-11 career postseason games, recording 34 tackles (30 solo), two interceptions (105 yds.) and 10 passes defensed.

Acquired from Washington in 2004 for running back Clinton Portis and a second-round draft choice that year, Bailey immediately made his mark in Denver. He totaled 21 interceptions during his first three years with the club, earning first-team All-Pro honors from the Associated Press following each of those seasons. He posted a career-high 10 interceptions in 2006 when he finished as runner-up for the Associated Press' Defensive Player of the Year.

Bailey is currently tied for the second most Pro Bowl selections (8) in Broncos history in addition to being tied for fourth on the club's all-time interceptions list (34).

A visible presence for the Broncos off the field, Bailey was a two-time recipient of Denver's Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award (2008-09) for his work in the community. He also was honored with the Darrent Williams Good Guy Award in 2011 for his cooperation and honesty in dealing with the media.

Bailey was the first back-to-back winner of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame's Pro Athlete of the Year Award (2005-06) and was named the Denver Athletic Club's Athlete of the Year for 2010.

Selected by Washington with the seventh overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft from the University of Georgia, Bailey spent his first five seasons with the Redskins. Bailey played alongside Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerbacks Darrell Green and Deion Sanders as he made the Pro Bowl in four of his five years with the Redskins.

One of college football's most dynamic players during his career at Georgia, Bailey contributed on offense, defense and special teams for the Bulldogs. In his final collegiate season, he earned consensus All-America and first-team All-Southeastern Conference recognition in addition to winning the Bronko Nagurski Award as the nation's top defensive player.

A Class-A all-state selection in football at Charlton County High School in Folkston, Ga., Bailey was born on June 22, 1978, in Fort Campbell, Ky.

With the Broncos set to release 12-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, the question of where Bailey will end up is now one of the hottest in the NFL landscape.

Champ Bailey's potential suitors

Champ Bailey has said he has no plans to retire, and even admits a switch to safety is possible. It makes you wonder why the Broncos and John Elway are so quick on releasing the 10-year Bronco, but we'll have more on that later.

That brings us to the question of "Where will Champ Bailey end up?" Will he be a hot free agent at this stage in his career? After Adam Schefter tweeted it, many are jumping on the Champ-homecoming-to-Georgia bandwagon. The Falcons have room at either cornerback or safety according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. There's a possibility.

Another possibility is the Patriots. Bill Belichick gave Bailey effusive praise in 2012, showing he's a big fan of Champ, and he's had remarkable success signing defensive backs late in their careers in the past.

"To me, he's one of the few corners in the league that really can match up against anybody. He matches up against the Andre Johnsons of the world, the big, strong, physical, fast guys. Then he'll match up against quick, real good route running, quick receivers, guys like that, too. [It] doesnt really make any difference. You can watch him match up against whoever they want to put him on, whether it's Mike Wallace or whether it's Calvin Johnson, through the years; I'm not just talking about this year.

"At times, he's been on tight ends, like when he would be on (Tony) Gonzalez back in the day and things like that. So, I think he's really capable of being physical and standing in there and banging with the big guys. He's got enough quickness and length with the little guys to match their quickness and give them a problem and stay with them, or if he gets his hands on them and jams them, he can destroy the route right off the bat.

"He's a very instinctive player, so he has a good sense of what the guy is trying to do and what their tendencies are and things like that. He's on a lot of routes just because he's experienced and he's smart. I think he can cover, I'd say there aren't too many corners in the league, it would be hard to think of who the next one would be, who like him could match up as well against any type of receiver."

Speaking of homecomings, another option might be the Washington Redskins, who originally traded Bailey to the Broncos for Clinton Portis in one of the NFL's last blockbuster player-for-player trades. Our friends at Hogs Haven break that down.

Other options might include the Seattle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders, Rant Sports speculates, but really, every team in the NFL seems like a possibility. Every team but one - the Broncos.

Wherever he goes, the Denver Post suggests Bailey will be a "first ballot" Broncos Ring of Famer five years after he retires, and we agree.

Broncos

He was drafted by the Redskins with the seventh overall pick of the 1999 draft and has totaled 52 career interceptions, including a career-high 10 in 2006.

The Money Pit
Rodgers-Cromartie signed what amounted to a one-year, $5 million deal last offseason; this year, he should receive three times that much in guaranteed money. Not only will he get paid, but this year’s version of Rodgers-Cromartie — somebody like Sam Shields — should get a multiyear deal with a significant guarantee, too. Everybody wants to play for a winner, but it’s difficult to pass up the financial security of a long-term deal.

Chris Harris Jr., Denver Broncos Harris was having a fantastic 2013 up until he tore his ACL in the AFC divisional playoff game. In 2012 he took over for Champ Bailey as Denver’s most solid corner and in 2013 he solidified that stance. Our 9th rated cornerback, he allowed only a 64.9 QB rating when thrown at in the regular season. Harris also performed equally as well in the slot allowing only one reception for every 11 snaps in coverage. With Harris most likely receiving a restricted free agent tender, he will be a financial steal again next year.

Eric Decker is one. He’s unequivocally a No. 2 receiver who put up big numbers by playing in a Peyton Manning-led offense. If he were anything but "just a guy," the Broncos would retain him. After all, they have almost $20 million in cap space and, with Manning nearing his end, their window is now. Other Role Flag guys include Decker’s former teammate Knowshon Moreno and Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate.

His pass-protection abilities still pair well with what the Broncos did under Peyton Manning, so he may be best off simply staying put. Eric Decker Decker had his most productive season in 2013 as a key part of Peyton Manning’s historic campaign. Not only is he a tough receiver over the middle with a full command of route concepts; he’s also faster in space than some may realize, as evidenced by his 14.8 yards per reception average. Now, the question is what kind of money Decker will be offered on the open market, and how much he’s seen as a product of Manning’s brilliance.
